well built and produced good photographs
the lens that came with the camera was not as versatile as I would usually use

the instructions on the camera to release the lens were not clear in the booklet and had to check on line for the right instructions

I had the original EOS M for years and despite it’s painfully slow autofocus I loved it. I’ve only had this a couple of weeks and it’s such a step up.

Excellent build quality, the sensor is awesome and the autofocus is a massive leap forward!
A bit pricey compared to other manufacturers.

Canon sent me EOS M6 model for review, and it is an impressive piece of kit. It came supplied with a 15 – 45mm Image Stabilizer lens. In the past we have had Nikon and Fuji cameras, so reviewing this Canon model was a pleasant surprise. When we define the word ‘compact’ we expect to see not many functions, well Canon has put a lot into the design of this camera, which you would not expect.
One thing that does stand out is there is no viewfinder, which I found odd. It makes up for this with the large LED touchscreen at the rear, which can be pulled out to see yourself on the camera. The touchscreen is very easy and handy to set up the date and time, and many other features before and after you have taken photographs.

You really need to spend some time to learn all the features that are packed in to this camera. The image quality is outstanding for a camera in this price range. Images at full resolution of 24.2-megapixel you can expect to be roughly 6Mb in file size per image, hence resolution of a RAW file is 5 – 7Mb depending on the image size. With the Macro enabled I did manage to clock one image at 13.2Mb in file-size, which was a still-shot of a minicomputer circuit. All the components were crystal clear and all text on the microchips were all readable, no blurring even when zooming in to photographs, using the touchscreen, there are numerous ways of displaying your images, you do not need to scroll through one image at a time – you can ‘pinch’ the screen to show around 25-30 images at a time, and scroll through them by a page at a time. Highest resolution is 6,000 x 4000 pixels, which is more than adequate for most people, whether you’re an amateur or a hobbyist.
The images produced by this camera are very good, with HDR enabled taking landscape photographs produces very detailed vivid colours, excellent contrast and brightness in most scenarios. It does have a built-in flash, which pops out of the top.

It does have its own built-in effects which can be applied to images, but to be honest I personally prefer to do this with 3rd party software. You can download some good software from the Canon website, and transfer images via wireless, Bluetooth 4.0 or even NFC or upload to cloud storage via Wi-Fi. Personally, I tend to stay away from NFC and Bluetooth, I would recommend both should be disabled when not in use.

The video by EOS M6 is standard HD 1080p (no 4k yet!). Videos are also great, stable, detailed and smooth. It would be nice to see 4k on a camera like this considering the price tag, but I can see 4k being added in a later model in the future.

I used a SanDisk SD memory card I had spare. It was only a 16Gb card, but plenty of room to test the camera out for reviewing purposes. I only charged the battery once during all testing, this included taking many images, viewing them and sending them over Wi-Fi using the Canon Camera Connect App.

All in all, this camera is a great piece of kit – do not be put off by Canon saying it is ‘compact’, it is not like any compact camera I have used before.
