Product information
The Sigma 18-250 mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM Telephoto Zoom Lens with Macro for Nikon DSLR cameras is both compact and versatile, its massive high-ratio zoom providing mesmerising close-up images.

Zoom, zoom, zoom

Designed for digital SLRs, the superzoom Sigma 18-250 mm f3.5-6.3 Macro Lens boasts a whopping 13.8x zoom ratio. You're ensured of a minimum focusing distance of 35 cm across the full zoom range, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9.

This means you'll be able to get closer than ever to subjects, providing intimate effects and revealing extremely fine levels of detail. Taking an APS-C size sensor into consideration, the effective maximum reproduction ratio becomes 1:2 – brilliant for close-up photography.

What's more, a magnification scale right on the lens barrel makes it so much easier to use – get just the macro effects you want in your photography.

Steady and quiet

The DC OS HSM 18-250 mm Macro Lens also features Sigma's Optical Stabiliser technology to compensate for camera shake at shutter speeds some four times slower than normal, giving your shots crisp definition.

This image stabilisation system also links up to cameras featuring an anti-shake system in the body, such as Nikon's VR technology, so you're ensured of stable, high-quality shots when capturing high-speed events such as motor sports, energetic live performances or animals in motion.

What's more, the Sigma HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures fast and quiet auto-focusing, crucial in situations where you need to stay silent, such as photographing wildlife or perhaps when sound is being recorded near you.

Improved lens design for better photographs

The lens is fitted with one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element which provides superior correction for colour aberrations, and three aspherical lenses which include a double-sided aspherical lens to prevent and correct for aberrations of all kinds, such as astigmatism.

Combined with Sigma's Super Multi-Layer Coating, you'll enjoy beautiful high-quality images across the zoom range, free from flare and ghosting and exhibiting exquisite sharpness and high contrast – even in backlit conditions.

To complete the package, the supplied petal-type hood blocks out superfluous light, diminishing internal reflections for fewer shots rendered unusable by spurious light intrusions.

A top contender in the general-purpose SLR lens market, the Sigma 18-250 mm f3.5-6.3 DC-OS HSM Telephoto Zoom Lens with Macro for Nikon DSLR cameras is a versatile way to get into macro photography, delivering stunning results.

Please note: Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35 mm SLR cameras.

This lens has very large focal range for a single lens, for a realistic price, which is the main reason I bought it. Optical stabilisation (aka Vibration Reduction) works very well. Also, because of the ultrasonic focusing motor (or HSM as Sigma call it), focussing is fast and quiet. The accuracy of autofocus depends more on your camera body than the lens of course, but this lens seems to be fine.
The other reason I bought this at Curry's is because they offer a 3-year warranty, so I thought it was worth a couple of quid extra. I still need to confirm the warranty with Curry's however, because the lens comes packaged with a Sigma European limited 1-year warranty.
No actual issues, just three things to be aware of:
1 - The lens comes nicely packaged and switched to AF. Do not try and turn the focus ring while it is switched to AF! The lens will survive, if you do, but you will be adding wear to the focussing 'motor'. When you switch focussing to Manual (M) you can turn the ring freely - the motor disengaged. Sigma only warn you of this near the bottom of the instructions, which many won't read anyway. One review I read said the manual focus override was 'stiff' - it's because you shouldn't try and manually focus while in AF.
2 - If you photograph things with lots of parallel lines (a building for example) at mid focal lengths, you will notice some pin-cushion distortion. This does not bother me in the least because it can all be corrected in Photoshop or GIMP or whatever. This is normal for superzooms.
3 - I tend to keep the lens locked in in between shots. It can extend under its own weight and if you swing around with the camera around your neck, you could bang the lens against something.

I found this lens to be a great all-rounder and an excellent upgrade to the standard lens supplied with the Nikon D3400. The 18-250 range is perfect when you need to have a good zoom range but also travel light e.g. on holiday and only want to carry one lens. The auto focus and image stabilization features works very well. As a hobbyist I am very happy with the image quality throughout the entire 18-250 range.
The only reason I have marked down one point on build quality is due to lens creep, you really do need to lock the lens every time to prevent it sliding out on it's own if the camera is hanging downwards, which some may find an inconvenience. However, I must stress that it would not stop me from buying this lens again, it is only a very minor complaint.
Overall at this price point, it is very difficult to find fault in this lens.
