How to accessorise your home office

Upgrade working from home with a few must-haves…

30 Mar 2020

If you’re having to make a new workspace at home, chances are you might face some challenges. Let’s be honest. Settling down on the sofa or propping up your laptop on some books isn’t ideal when you’ve got a full day’s work ahead.

It’s always a better idea to find a space in your home that you can turn into a proper working office. That’s why we’ve put our heads together and picked out a few things that will really help turn your that little corner of your house into a place where you can power through your day.

Office chair

Yes, it may seem obvious, but you can’t beat a good office chair. Why? Well, it’s fully adjustable and you can make yourself comfortable – providing much need back support. We all know the pain of a week spent working on a dining room chair.

What’s also important is it’s not your sofa or your bed. It’s no good trying to get to work in a place that you generally relax. When you sit down in your very office chair each morning, you know that it’s time for work.

TEKNIK have a whole range – with features like back mesh and lumbar massage. Good luck keeping the rest of the family out of it…

Feet, back and wrist rests

If you’re looking for an extra level of support, accessories that help keep you in a comfortable seating position can be a major help. Homes aren’t geared towards posture support and comfort the way offices are. After a couple of weeks working at home, you’ll see why feet, back and wrist are such must-haves.

Any suggestions?

KENSINGTON has fully adjustable foot and back rests. Plus, HYPERX keyboard wrist rests have a memory foam layer for extra comfort.

Noise-cancelling headphones

In a perfect world, we’d all like a soundproof office where we can get away from household noises – whether that’s the TV, pets or a ringing phone. But most of us live in houses with plenty of distractions. Nothing wrong with that at the end of the day or during the weekend – but sometimes you’ve got to knuckle down and hit that deadline.

So, when you really need to concentrate, a pair of noise-cancelling headphones is a godsend. On top models, you can easily switch between total silence, letting the world back in or listening to music – without interrupting the rest of the house.

Any suggestions?

Bose or Sony are just two brands that do great noise-cancelling headphones. Go for wireless Bluetooth for added convenience.

Mouse and keyboard

Working at home on a laptop can be a tricky business – especially if you’re using a trackpad to move between emails, spreadsheets and documents. It may seem obvious, but until you invest in a wireless, optical mouse which runs smoothly over seemingly any surface, you don’t know what you’re missing.

The same is true of a keyboard. Give your laptop keyboard an upgrade with enhanced, programmable keys. It also means you can raise your laptop screen to a comfortable position height while keeping your keyboard within easy reach. This will prevent you from hunching over your laptop.

Any suggestions?

Logitech do a wireless mouse and keyboard bundle, so you can get office ready all in one go.

Table lamp

Lighting makes a space, and this is certainly true when it comes to your home office. Whether you work in a part of the house which doesn’t get great natural light, or your household bulbs are a bit underpowered – it’s great to have a consistent light that works with you.

You could pick up a standard desk lamp but (since most of us use backlit computer screens anyway) you might not need that kind of directional lighting. One great solution is a smart lamp. No idea what that is? It’s a table lamp you can control from your phone. You can also set a schedule – so once you hit the end of your working day – you could dim the lights right down to remind you it’s time to relax.

PHILIPS Hue White Ambience Wellness Smart Table Lamp is easy to set and customise – plus you can pair it with Google Home or Amazon Alexa.
