Download your favourite movies and shows with Netflix

There's a new way to watch Netflix, so you can still view your movies even when there's no signal...

Netflix is giving everyone a big Christmas present. Despite previously saying you wouldn’t be able to, Netflix is now letting you download movies and shows so you can watch them when you’re not connected to the internet.

On demand services such as Netflix have grown hugely in popularity over the last couple of years and many, such as Amazon Prime Video, allowing users to download content to watch while they’re offline.

Netflix has previously stated that downloading makes things too complicated, as customers would have to plan what they want to watch and take time to download it before setting out. The move to allow this functionality while still keeping the simple click and stream option is designed to give the best possible Netflix experience wherever you are in the world.

What can you download?

At the moment, only a select number of shows and movies are available to download. Most of what’s available so far are shows created by Netflix. This includes Stranger Things, The Crown, Orange is the New Black, Narcos, Black Mirror and Sky Ladder. Non-Netflix shows available to download include Community, Bad Education, Skins and Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Movies available to download include Django Unchained, Bad Grandpa and Sicario. More titles will be added in the future.

Why would you want to download?

Downloading your Netflix content lets you watch it even when you’re not connected to WiFi. This means you can catch up on shows while commuting, on a plane or during a long car journey.

It’s also useful if you know you’ll be heading somewhere where the WiFi signal isn’t very strong – because the movie is downloaded, you won’t experience any drops in quality or pauses. Also, you won’t eat into your data allowance by streaming when you’re watching a downloaded movie.

How can I download?

First, you need to download the latest version of the Netflix App for your phone, tablet or PC. Then, when you’re connected to WiFi simply by selecting the download option from the episode list or title page of the movie you want to download.
