Madeleine Shaw shares her tips for healthy living

Madeleine Shaw first started her wellness blog as a way to share healthy recipes. A few years on, her books and app have taken the wellness world by storm!

“Healthy living should be a way of life,” says bestselling cookery writer and wellness blogger Madeleine Shaw, “not just a fad or phase.”

It’s a message she’s made her mission to share through posting wholesome, original recipes on her website and social channels, racking up over 250k followers on Instagram alone. In fact, the success of her recipes has been so phenomenal that it led to the release of her first book Get the Glow in 2015, followed by a second, Ready Steady Glow, the following year.

But it hasn’t always been this way for Madeleine. Her love of healthy living was actually born out of a self-confessed “tortuous” relationship with food and her body. It was only through studying nutrition and putting in hours of hard work into her blog that she was able to finally turn this negativity into something truly positive.

So how did Madeleine break years of bad habits and turn her passion for nutrition into a career? Follow the story of how she got started and her tips for healthy living.


Get the Glow

Madeleine’s journey began when she moved to Australia aged 18 and started working at an organic café. There she learned to prepare wholesome meals from scratch and, as she started properly nourishing her body again, she regained the energy she’d lost through depriving her body of nutrients. Gradually she found herself “falling back in love with food, life and, most important of all, myself.”

At that point, Madeleine says something “clicked” in her brain and she decided to embark on a course at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in Sydney, becoming a nutritional health coach in 2012. When she returned to the UK later that year she set up her blog – and made it her mission to spread the word through her 6-week ‘Get the Glow’ program.

Originally her site was designed as a way to provide recipes and helpful information about healthy living to those who couldn’t access her coaching on a one-to-one basis. It still is today, but on a much larger scale than she ever could have imagined. Through her blog and books, she’s helped thousands of men and women make healthy eating part of their lives.

Madeleine Shaw’s food philosophy is simple: it’s all about being the “hottest, healthiest and happiest” version of you. And the key to this is eating simple, wholesome and - most importantly - delicious meals.


Start your passion with the right tech

Want to get your own passion off the ground and turn it into a career like Madeleine? First off, you’ll want to equip yourself with the right tech. Madeleine recommends a laptop with a long battery life – her model of choice is the Lenovo Yoga 510.

Set it up with software like Microsoft Office for working on and create a professional email address for contacting clients. And don’t forget your charger if you’re working remotely.

Stay healthy while you’re working

Of course, it’s just as important to stay healthy while you work. Madeleine has a few tricks for that too:

  • Hydrate before you caffeinate – “grab a big glass of water in the morning before you have that coffee”. Keep hydrated throughout the day by making sure you have a big bottle of water on your desk 
  • Eat protein for breakfast – “protein-pack your breakfast with scrambled eggs on toast or add hemp seeds to your porridge to keep you going through the day”
  • Take a walk – “get out in the fresh air and get your daily dose of Vitamin D.” You could even find a healthy lunch spot on the way to break up your day
  • Breathe – stay cool in stressful moments with mindful breaths
  • Sleep well – “try and clock in those 8 hours of sleep – it’s going to make you wake up feeling refreshed and raring to go” 

For her final piece of advice, Madeleine says: “There’s only one you. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else and go after your passion.”
