Think a life outside of the 9-5 isn’t possible for you? Loads of people have broken away from the typical working life – and it’s easier than you think.

It’s a myth that there certain types of jobs you can’t do abroad. And there’s never been a better time to do it thanks to technology.

Find out how to use your laptop as your office hub, with the right software, to help you work remotely.

Things to consider before you go:

  • Type of work – are you going to work for a company remotely, go freelance or start your own business?
  • Location – do you want to rent an office or co-working space or are you going to work from home and in coffee shops?
  • Connectivity – you’ll most likely want to live and work somewhere that has a fast internet speed

Essential equipment for your remote office

Forget having a desk that’s cluttered with a monitor, and countless folders and files. A smartphone and laptop with the right software could be all you need to work or run your business.

Access your emails with a webmail service like Gmail or Office 365 – sync it with your phone so you can respond to messages on the go.

If you’re worried about the cost of making international phone calls, you can use Skype to get reduced rates to landlines and mobiles.

When it comes to running your office, your laptop will act as a hub for everything you do. Look for a model with plenty of power for working at top speed, in a lightweight design you can slip in your bag and take with you.

Great for using on the go, the HP Spectre is incredibly slim at just 10.4mm thin and weighs just under a kilogram. Get your work done or run your business with ease – it’s a multitasking dream with a powerful 6th Gen Intel Core processor. There’s plenty of room for all your files too with 256GB SSD storage.

The premium finish looks slick and professional – even if you’re working in shorts and a t-shirt on the beach.

Choose the right software

Once you’ve got the tech, find the right software to get your work account or business up and running.

Office 365 Home is the go-to for word processing, presentations and spreadsheets for many professionals. It includes apps like Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel that are used in most workplaces.

With it you can:

  • Use it on your laptop, tablet and phone – install it on up to 5 different computers and 5 tablets or smartphones for 1 year as part of your subscription
  • Have peace of mind with 1TB of SkyDrive cloud storage to back up your files
  • Share documents with your contacts using OneNote digital notebook
  • Renting office space and working on a different computer? You can still access all your Office applications on demand

Or try Office Home & Business and make the most of the newly improved 2016 versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook. You’ll only be able to use it on 1 laptop though.

Keep your files secure

You don’t need an in-house server to back up your work – you can use a Cloud storage program, a secure online service that you can use to save your files instead.

With Cloud storage you can save important files on your laptop – and access them from your smartphone or any other device you’ve synced. That means even if you lose your laptop you’ll still be able to access your files.

Cloud storage services like Dropbox and Google Drive also offer shared file editing, so you and your colleagues can work on a presentation or spreadsheet together – no matter where you all are in the world. It’s also great for sharing large files like presentations, images and videos.

Or go for a portable external hard drive – a small device you plug into your laptop’s USB port to back up and access your files. The main advantage is that you don’t need an internet connection to access your files.
