Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Unpacked: Everything you need to know
It’s official, the Samsung Galaxy Note8 is coming. Here’s all the latest info from Samsung’s Unpacked event.
28 Aug 2017
Samsung's latest Unpacked event was hotly anticipated to reveal the brand-new Galaxy Note8 and it definitely didn’t disappoint. We’ve already seen the shiny new Galaxy S8 and S8+, and now the Note8 has joined the family.
- 6.3-inch Super AMOLED infinity display
- Quad HD+ resolution
- Dual-lens rear camera
- Integrated S Pen
- 3,300mAh battery
Now we've covered the device in a nutshell, here’s everything you need to know:
What does it look like?
Like the S8 and S8+, the Note8 boasts the wide, bezel-less Super AMOLED infinity display. Giving you maximum screen for the size of the device.
At 6.3-inches, it’s only a tad bigger than the S8+ (6.2-inches) and looks-wise it’s pretty similar, too. All sleek glass and metal. The official Note8 measurements are 162.5 x 74.8 x 8.6 mm and it weighs 195g, so it’s the heftiest Note yet.
The Note8 is starting off with 4 colours: Midnight Black, Maple Gold, Deep Sea Blue and Orchard Grey. But there’ll probably be more to follow if you like to stand out from the crowd.
How much power does it have?
Samsung are playing safe with the Note8 battery so it’s got a 3,300mAh power pack, which is smaller than the Galaxy S8+.
This is partly to avoid a repeat of the Note 7 disaster, and partly because there’s not as much room with the S Pen integrated into the body. It is fast charging though, and can charge wirelessly with a wireless charging pad.
For storage, you can choose between 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. Plus, there’s a microSD slot for extra space.
What can the dual-lens camera do?
The Galaxy Note8 is Samsung’s first flagship phone to feature dual lenses. You get one 12MP telephoto lens and one 12MP wide-angle lens, which can work separately or together for super sharp snapping. This means you get 2x optical zoom and bokeh background blur.
If you’re more of a selfie-taker than arty Instagrammer, the front-facing camera is 8MP.
Any updates to the S Pen?
A Note wouldn’t be complete without an S Pen and the Note8 is no exception. It’s got an upgraded stylus that pops neatly into the body – so there’s less change of losing it.
The pen is much more sensitive and has a finer tip, which makes it much more intuitive to use – much more like a pen and less like a clumsy finger.
One of the coolest new features is that you can draw pictures with the S Pen and send them as animated GIFs. An improved translate function also means you can get quick translations by hovering over words or sentences.
- It’s IP68 certified – that makes it dust and water-resistant
- There’s extra security – you can unlock it with the fingerprint sensor or iris scanner
