Sky to show football and films in 4K Ultra HD from August

Sky announces heaps of 4K content including more than 100 top-flight football matches and over 70 films. Is it time you bought a 4K TV?

20 Jul 2016

Do you have Sky TV? Millions of people across the UK and Ireland do. From August they can watch sport and movies in 4K Ultra HD resolution – provided they have the right Sky package and a 4K UHD TV.

Good news for 4K content

4K Ultra HD TVs can produce a picture with 4 times as many pixels as Full HD. The resolution packs in 8 million pixels and is known as 2160p – as opposed to the 1080p of Full HD. It delivers a detailed, realistic picture with improved contrast and depth.

To get a true 4K experience on your TV you also need 4K content. In the same way as you had to have Sky HD or BBC HD channels to get the best from your Full HD TV.

The first 4K TVs suffered as there was hardly any 4K (2160p) content to watch on them. Since then much more 4K content has become available from the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime. And 4K is increasingly becoming the norm among larger 40 to 50-inch TVs.

Sky has millions of subscribers and could potentially open up 4K content to a more traditional TV audience perhaps not as familiar with online streaming services and apps like Netflix. It is introducing ‘an unrivalled line-up of Ultra HD TV,’ says a Sky spokesman.

What can you watch on Sky in 4K?

Football, films and documentaries take centre stage in Sky’s 4K Ultra HD offering – launching on August 13. The line-up will be split across live broadcasts, on-demand and the Sky Store.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • 124 live top-flight football matches this season starting with Hull City v Leicester City
  • Movie premieres including Oscar-winner The Revenant and Bond film Spectre
  • Classic on-demand films like Forrest Gump, Minority Report and The Godfather
  • The 2017 international motor racing championship
  • Natural history documentaries from the likes of David Attenborough and National Geographic
  • The Young Pope – a new Sky/HBO/Canal+ drama starring Jude Law and other new drama series

What you need to watch Sky in 4K

You will need the right hardware and subscription package from Sky as well as a compatible 4K Ultra HD TV.

Sky Q is the latest version of Sky TV. It comes in 2 options: Sky Q and Sky Q Silver. To watch content in 4K you need the Sky Q Silver box and subscription package.Documentaries and entertainment in 4K are included as standard. But if you want to watch football and movies as well, you’ll need to add Sky Sports and Sky Cinema to your subscription package.

Sky Cinema is the new Sky Movies. It launched early in July with a host of new features for movie lovers.

What do our experts think?

‘This is the biggest step forward in television in the last 10 years since the first HD broadcast,’ says our Large Screen TV Buyer James Griffiths. ‘It’s the start of the 4K revolution which will take TV viewing to a new level.’

James urges people to come in store to see for themselves the rich detail of 4K TV. ‘All of our stores have 4K demonstrations,’ he says. ‘You can come and experience stunning 4K picture quality first hand.

With Sky joining the 4K party alongside Netflix and Amazon, and prices of 4K TVs falling… isn’t it time you upgraded?
