Sonos speakers get Apple Music – we list the best bits

Sonos has brought multi-room to the masses but now its service gets even better with the addition of Apple Music…

19 Feb 2016

Sonos speakers let you create the ideal audio setup for your home. With them you can play music wirelessly in every room – pick tracks from your own music library, or boost it with streaming services for even more choice.

You’ve been able to stream music from Spotify, Google Play Music, Soundcloud and Tidal to your Sonos speakers for a while. Now Apple Music has joined the line-up, giving you access to even more artists and expert-approved playlists.

We show you how to use Apple Music on Sonos, and pick out some of its best features.

Sonos speakers

The beauty of Sonos is that you can create a network of speakers as small or large you like, depending on the size of your home. Start with one speaker and keep adding to it to get the right audio set-up for you.

Stream music to any room in the house – play different songs in the kitchen and living room, or have the same running throughout. It’s all controlled from the Sonos app, which you can use to change tracks or adjust the volume.

Pair your Sonos speakers with a streaming service, and you’re armed with an enormous back catalogue of tracks to choose from.

Sonos teams up with Apple Music

Now that Apple Music is available, you’ll be able to stream the entire Apple Music library to your Sonos speakers – giving you access to millions of tracks, curated playlists by the likes of Dr Dre and St Vincent, and radio stations.

Why choose Apple Music? The proof is in popularity – the service launched 7 months ago and already has more than 11million subscribers. When paired with a Sonos speaker you can:

  • listen to 43million songs in Apple’s library – save albums, subscribe to curated playlists or create your own
  • receive personalised recommendations from music-industry experts, based on the tracks you like
  • discover new music on the Beats 1 radio network, with broadcasts from London, New York and Los Angeles
  • play Sonos’ own station, created exclusively for Apple Music

How to get set up

To add Apple Music to your Sonos set-up, you’ll need to be subscribed to the streaming service, or try the free 3-month trial. Subscribe to Apple Music.

From your Sonos app, select ‘Add Music Services’ and select the Apple Music icon to enable it. Then log into your Apple Music account and start streaming.

Tip: Apple Music works through the Sonos App – so you’ll have to stream through there, rather than the standalone app.
