When Sony announces they have something important to say, everyone sits up and takes notice. Despite another big announcement being made by Apple just before the PlayStation Meeting, it seemed like all the world’s gaming press had gathered together in the PlayStation Theatre underneath Times Square to hear the address.

PS4 Pro

The really big news was the official announcement of the PlayStation 4 Pro. This is an updated and enhanced version of the console, with extra power under the hood powerful enough to cater for 4K and HDR TVs. Everything from the CPU to the graphics hardware has been upgraded to ensure the best possible 4K and HDR experience.

One thing Sony is clear on – This isn’t a “PlayStation 5”. The Pro is purely an updated, premium, version of the PS4 designed to give the best performance on 4K TVs.

Event better, you may see some improvements in graphics over the standard PS4, even if you only have an HD TV. The console is capable of displaying enhanced graphics in games that support them, and some games you already own may even appear better on the PS4 Pro as many are being patched for the new console. Many new and remastered games were on display, including Uncharted, Tomb Raider, COD and Mass Effect Andromeda.

PS4 Pro is expected on November 10th.

PS4 Slim

On the other hand, the PlayStation 4 Slim takes the existing console we know and love and shrinks it into a small (but perfectly formed) case. It doesn’t lose any power, and is probably the version to go for if you don’t think you’ll be upgrading to a 4K TV anytime soon.

The really good news here is the PS4 Slim will also support HDR content, so games will look even better on every PlayStation 4 from now on.

The PS4 Slim is expected to arrive in September.
