Turn vlogging into a career with George Benson’s tips
YouTube sensation George Benson’s passion for vlogging came from watching other people’s videos. When he started making his own, he had no idea it would turn into a career…

Imagine netting over 12 million views on YouTube and hundreds of thousands of fans without stepping foot in Hollywood? That’s exactly what travel vlogger George Benson has managed to do in just a few years.
Developing a passion
When George first started making YouTube videos for fun, he didn’t know his hobby would give him the inspiration for his travel vlog – and eventually turn into a full-time gig.
George’s travels have taken his audience with him all over the globe, from Husky driving in Finland to the sunny beaches of Brazil. His favourite destination to vlog? “Without a doubt Washington State and Oregon,” he says. “Seattle isn’t always first on people’s lists of American tourist cities, but this trip was my favourite as we managed to see so much in such a short period of time.”
With little camera or editing experience, George had to scour tutorials on YouTube to hone his skills. He explains: “It’s something I found frustrating as I struggled to cut videos so that they looked clean, but once I figured out how to do one thing, I moved onto the next. It was editing through trial and error.”
Being in front of the camera had its own challenges too – particularly when it came to relaxing and appearing natural on screen. So how does he make it look so easy now? “Talk to the camera like you’re having a conversation with your friends over dinner,” he says.
Having the right equipment has been important too. George has experimented with many different cameras over the years but now he wouldn’t be without his Sony a7 II. With 4K video and slow motion capabilities, he reckons it’s the perfect vlogging camera. George also loves to use his GoPro HERO4 on the move – it’s fantastic for action shots when he’s driving.
At the end of last year, George took on the challenge of posting to his channel every single day. As you can imagine that’s a lot of video editing – and a laptop that can handle it is a must.
He says: “I always look for a laptop that is going to render out videos as fast as possible. The most frustrating thing is when a laptop crashes halfway through exporting a project.” That’s why he loved trying out the HP Spectre 13 from our range - and even named it as his favourite laptop.
George admits that following his passion rather than a ‘normal’ career path can be a little daunting. If it’s something you enjoy doing though, he believes it’s worth trying. Here are his tips for making a name for yourself in the world of vlogging:
- Make sure it’s something you feel strongly about – chances are someone else will enjoy what you do
- Spend time watching other people’s YouTube videos – think about what you like and don’t like about them and develop your own style
- Try to have a story in mind when filming your vlog – a clear narrative really makes a difference, along with a mix of cinematic shots
- Don’t get discouraged when you post something and don’t get many views – not every vlog goes viral on the first try
As a final piece of advice to aspiring vloggers, George says: “The most important thing is that you really enjoy and are passionate about what you are doing”
