What is a 2 in 1 laptop?

Can’t decide between a laptop for writing essays and a tablet for watching films? A 2-in-1 laptop gives you both – it’s literally the best of both worlds!

And they’ve come a long way. You can now choose 2-in-1 computers with detachable keyboards, or ones that fold 360-degrees around the device. And most 2-in-1s come with Windows 10, which is specifically designed for touchscreens.

Why are 2 in 1s great for students?

Forget having to buy and carry around two separate machines. A 2-in-1 laptop gives you the functionality that you’d get with both, minus the cost of buying a second device.

Use it in ‘laptop mode’ for writing essays, preparing presentations, creating spreadsheets and taking notes during lectures. Then switch to use it as a tablet for watching catch-up TV, giving presentations, online shopping, reading news articles and scrolling through Instagram.

Here are 5 things to consider when choosing a 2-in-1 laptop for uni…

Hinged or detachable

1. Hinged or detachable?

Hinged 2-in-1 laptops look and feel like a premium laptop. They have larger screens (perfect for presentations) and more powerful processors.

Detachable 2-in-1 laptops give you the freedom to use or carry around the tablet without the keyboard. They usually have smaller screens than hinged models and often have less powerful processors.

The hinged Asus Flip 2-in-1 Chromebook is perfect for film fans. It has a 360° hinge so you can use it in tent mode – which means the keyboard won’t get in the way while you’re watching.

Plus, it comes with a full HD 14” screen to give you all of the action without compromising on quality. And you don’t have to worry about forgetting your charger, as its 10-hours of laptop battery will keep you going all the way through lectures and beyond.

2. Will you be using it around campus?

If you’re going to be carrying your 2-in-1 around all day, you’ll want a computer with long battery life and slim, lightweight design.

The lightweight Microsoft Surface Go laptop is ideal for carrying around campus. But it still packs a performance punch, thanks to its Intel® Pentium® Gold processor. Its detachable Surface Pen and Typecover make it ideal for jotting down handwritten notes or making sketches on the go – as well as typing up essays.

As well as all of this, it has 9-hours of battery life and a Full HD display that’s perfect for watching shows, reading articles online or editing photos. What’s more, because the Surface Go has two cameras, which are both Full HD, you can easily catch up with friends and call your family back home – without losing out on video quality.

3. Will you be using it to give presentations?

Giving presentations as part of your degree? A 2-in-1 laptop can be a great tool to give your work that wow factor.

Surface Book 2

Want lightweight portability but with the latest tech? Look no further than the Microsoft Surface Book 2. It’s part of our Achieve range, which has the latest tech to help you develop your ideas and work at your best.

Its super powerful processor can handle all your demanding software. Need to present in 3D? No problem – make your work stand out with beautifully rendered 3D graphics and visuals. Plus, with Windows Ink, you can sketch out ideas on the screen to make your seminar group green with envy.

4. How much power do you need?

Your computer’s processor acts as its brain. The more powerful it is, the more you can do with your 2-in-1.

Cheaper 2-in-1 laptops often come with an Intel Celeron or Premium processor. These are more than powerful enough for surfing the web and writing essays, but you may struggle with more demanding tasks such as video and photo editing or gaming.

If you’re going to be multi-tasking on your laptop – for example, editing photos, working in Microsoft Office, streaming Spotify and browsing webpages all at the same time – it’s worth going for a higher-powered Intel Core processor.

5. Do you want to watch TV and films?

If you’re planning on regular Netflix binges, you don’t want to skimp on-screen quality. Look at devices with Full HD displays for a crisp, colourful picture.

The Quad HD display and premium graphics card in the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 range let you watch movies in vibrant colour and pinpoint detail. This range also offers the few 2-in-1s that can handle games effectively, plus you can pair it with your Xbox Wireless Controller for gaming on the go.
