25th March is International Waffle Day which means you basically have to eat waffles. And while we all love crunchy, sweet waffles, the decision gets all the tougher when we think about toppings.

Fortunately, some of the best culinary minds all over the world have left their own mark on things. But do you go sweet or meat? North American or Asian inspired? Are you all about the flavours or would you rather whip up a dish that looks the business on Instagram?

Here are 6 of our faves. So, let's cut the waffle and help you find your perfect waffle topper...

1. Belgian waffles – Belgium

The Belgian waffle is the classic waffle set up. Known for their large pockets (all the more room for chocolate sauce), Belgian waffles are generally served with cream, powdered sugar, chocolate and fruit - but our fave take is probably strawberries, ice cream and chocolate sauce.

2. Egg "Bubble" waffles – Hong Kong

If you're looking for a lighter kind of waffle, try out this egg "bubble" waffle from Hong Kong. Known as gai daan zai (little eggs in Cantonese), this waffle is light, doughy and fluffy - so you can fill up on more ice cream instead! Here's an egg waffle recipe if you want to try making it yourself.

3. Canadian bacon waffles – Canada

To put their stamp on classic Belgian waffles, Canada have added salty bacon and sweet maple syrup (what else!) and serve it up for breakfast. If you think the idea of bacon and maple syrup on sweet dishes is wrong, we won't tell you about maple bacon doughnuts.

4. Buttermilk chicken waffles – USA

Another meat treat, Buttermilk chicken waffles have been all the rage over the last few years but actually date back to American abolitionists of the 1840s. Topped with syrup or with a side of peaches and cream, these are finger licking good!

5. Pandan coconut waffles – Vietnam

Want a less sweet waffle option? Pandan waffles come from Vietnam, where they're made with coconut milk and pandan leaf extract. It gives these delicate waffles an amazing green colour and a sweet, fragarant smell.

6. Taiyaki ice cream waffles – Japan

Fishing for compliments? If you can make a Taikayi waffle, you'll have earned them. Taiyaki is sea bream shaped waffle - but fortunately that's where the fishiness ends. Although traditionally stuffed with a Japanese sweet red bean paste when invented back in 1909, they now come stuffed with ice cream. That's progress!
