Take a good look at your carpets. Are they looking a little tired? Getting grimy? Starting to pong from pets, perhaps? Then you’re reading the right article.
Today, we’re sharing some top tips to get your carpets clean, pristine, and looking their best.
1. Tackle spills and stains
If your carpet has any stains from coffee, tea, wine, pets, kids, or of a worryingly unknown origin, tackle them first.
The best time to work on any stain is just after the accident has happened – when the carpet is still wet. A carpet cleaner will give you the best results, and you might even want to dab the stain with a good spot-cleaning stain remover before you start cleaning. Stick to the manufacturer’s instructions, and be aware that you might be left with a light patch if it’s an old carpet – which means you’ll have to wash the whole thing!
2. Shampoo regularly
Yep, just like hair, carpets really benefit from being shampooed regularly. We recommend you do it every 3 months. But before you start, please check if your carpet can actually be shampooed. Some can’t.
As you can see from the video above, we gave the Vax Platinum SmartWash carpet cleaner a go, and got great results using the anti-bacterial solution that comes with it. It’s simple to use too - push it forward to wash, pull back to dry. Easy.
3. Rub out indents
Now let’s talk about indents – those marks that chairs, tables, and other pieces of furniture can make on carpets. They can be a real eyesore, especially when you move furniture around to reveal them. So, let’s try and reduce them (or banish them completely) with an ice cube.
Yes, an ice cube. Rub it into the indent, and the carpet fibres will slowly swell as the melting water is absorbed. This will turn your nasty indent into something a lot less noticeable. It might take a few attempts to make a real difference, so be patient. And remember to pat your carpet dry afterwards.
4. Get into corners, nooks and crannies
Check out the spare heads, tools and accessories that come with your vacuum cleaner. You’ll usually find a few designed to clean hard-to-reach areas. A crevice tool will get your carpet edges clean, and help you get right under chairs, sofas and radiators. We can help you find out which vacuum cleaner tools are best, and when to use them.
5. Do floors and carpets last
But wait! If you’re planning on giving your home a proper deep clean, you shouldn’t hit the floors straight away. In fact, leave them to last and clean your house from top to bottom – literally. That way, you’ll be able to clear up all the dirt, dust, grime and other nasties that end up falling on your floor.
Get a powerful cordless vacuum cleaner like the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute, and you’ll be able to clean your entire home without too much effort. It has a sensor that automatically increases the suction power needed for the deepest cleaning, and you don't need to mess around with settings - it's all automatic. Oh, and be sure to look after your bag-free vacuum cleaner properly.
