On its release back in April, The OPPO Reno gave us something different. Aside from its big screen and good looks, there was the pop-up shark fin selfie cam that proved a geniunely novel feature. And it looks like its successor is full of surprises too. Announced at their event in London, OPPO have unveiled a new phone packed with all the top drawer tech you’d expect with a new flagship phone, but with a price tag making it a little more accessible than bigger brands.
So, what can we expect from the second outing of the Reno series? We went along to find out…
OPPO Reno 2 design
Oppo has gone out of its way to pursue a sleek design with no sharp or rough edges. This is achieved by a 3D curved glass body.
Sounds fragile? Not at all. As well as screen protection the Oppo Reno 2 also has a 5th Generation Corning Gorilla Glass back cover. So, no drama if you drop your phone. Even if you drop it in the bath, you’re ok thanks to IPX4 Waterproofing.
OPPO Reno 2 colours
So far, we know of two colours: luminous black and ocean blue. Although this may seem limited, both move and change with the light - giving the phone a glossy look which really stands out from the crowd.
OPPO Reno 2 screen
Unlike the Google Pixel 4, Oppo are moving away from bezels to a notchless and borderless phone. And they have no need for a notch, since the Reno 2 comes with that Oppo’s distinctive shark fin camera. More on that in a minute.
The screen is a generous 20:9 6.5-inch AMOLED screen. This is great news for those of us who are increasingly using our phones for watching videos and shopping online. Plus, the Reno’s E3 Sunlight AMOLED screen means that it adapts to different light conditions. So you’ll always be able to see your screen - even when sunbathing by the pool.
OPPO Reno 2 camera
The current camera trend in the smartphone world seems to be: the more the better – and Oppo doesn’t disappoint here. The Reno 2 comes equipped with a quad camera.
48MP Ultra-Clear Camera
8MP Wide Angle Lens
13MP Telephoto Lens
2 MP Mono Lens
This combination of cameras delivers great wide-angle shots, a 5x hybrid zoom, plus an amazing 20x digital zoom. The iconic pivot raising “shark fin” 16MP camera pops up in less than a second and is a selfie-lovers dream. Clever algorithms reduce noise, giving crystal clear shots.
This computing wizardry is also evident in other camera features:
• Ultra Dark Mode creates detailed picture in night time conditions. Perfect for that those festival nights.
• Ultra Micro mode means that you can zoom in for startling detail. So you can fill up your Insta with pics good enough for National Geographic.
• Mulitple Portrait modes give you a choice of many different styles depending on the effect you’re after.
• Ultra Steady Mode means you can say goodbye to motion blur – even when you’re skiing downhill. Though you should probably keep your hands on your poles.
Ultra Steady mode comes in handy when shooting video – which this phone does a great job of – but then there’s Audio 3D Mode. This means you can zoom into your subject and you’ll be able to hear their voice. This is a great feature when you’re at a lively party.
Under the hood
To keep everything running smoothly, the Oppo Reno 2 comes equppied with the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chipset. Then there’s 8GB RAM of memory which takes care of normal use, with 256GB of storage. This translates to more than 100 thousand photos and videos.
Gamers rejoice! The Reno 2 also boasts a powerful gaming engine, known as EngineBoost. So you can have a go on Fortnite before seamlessly switching to Facebook or Youtube.
OPPO Reno 2 battery life
At the heart of the Oppo Reno 2 is its 4000mAh battery. While you can give it pretty intense use all day without worrying, there’s no need to worry. This phone comes with USB-C fast charging, claiming to charge 23.8% faster than previous models. So there’s no need to hang around waiting for your precious battery life!
