Electric scooters can be a pretty fast way to zoom around. But whizzing around at top speed might not always be the smartest way to go. Don’t worry though- we’ve got some tips and tricks on how to be speedy, safe and get the most out of your e-scooter!

How fast do electric scooters go?

If we’re talking the absolute top speed it’s possible for a scooter to reach, you’re looking at about 30mph. After that point, they need things like a chair or foot frames to keep you from falling off. Though that makes them look distinctly less scooter-y.

But not so fast! The speed limit for e-scooters in the UK is 15.5 mph. And in the London e-scooter trials, the government have created special ‘go-slow’ areas where the speed limit goes down to 8 mph.

It’s also important to remember that those UK speed limits are for rental e-scooters in areas where there’s an electric scooter trial going on. It’s still illegal to ride a private e-scooter (i.e. one that you’ve bought rather than rented) on UK roads, pavements and cycle lanes. So if you’re getting your own e-scooter, make sure you stick to private land for now. And don’t forget to get the landowner’s permission too!

What things affect an electric scooter’s speed?

Being fast isn’t just about how many mph your e-scooter can go. That’s just how speedy it is on paper. In the real world, there are lots of things that can affect how fast you are and the kind of scooter you should buy.

Your weight: the heavier you are, the more powerful a motor your e-scooter will need to get you up to top speed. This is because there’s more resistance for the scooter to contend with. So a scooter than can go 15mph with someone very petite might not be able to reach that with a 6”3 body builder!

Where you’re riding it: Think you’ll be tackling a few hills here and there? If so, a stronger motor will help you get up them faster and won’t conk out when the going gets tough. An uneven surface (like gravel or a lawn) will slow you down too. And it might even be unsafe to go too fast somewhere with lots of lumps and bumps! But if you want to whizz across flat terrain, you shouldn’t have much trouble getting to high speeds- even if your motor’s not too powerful.

Tire pressure: An e-scooter with high quality tires will help you go much faster than one without. When the tires are too soft, not only will your speed suffer but your ride will be a heck of a lot more uncomfortable too!

Battery life: Going at higher speeds will often use up a lot more of your e-scooter’s juice, since the motor’s having to work harder. If you know you’ll want to travel far and do it fast, make sure you invest in an e-scooter with a long battery life.

How can I ride my electric scooter safely?

Safety first! If you’re planning on hurtling around, it’s best to take some extra precautions.

Wear a helmet: So we know this isn’t the slickest of options, but it really is the best way to save yourself from a nasty accident.

Don’t lock your knees: If you’re stiff as a board on your e-scooter, you’re more likely to lose your balance and fall if you hit a bump. Bend your knees slightly instead and you’ll find it much easier.

Ditch the music: It’s best not to stick your headphones on when you’re riding your e-scooter- since you might be focusing more on your tunes and less on what’s ahead of or around you.

Our top picks for speedy scooters

Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 electric scooter

A powerful 300W motor makes reaching this e-scooter’s top speed (15.5mph) a breeze. It can really go the distance too, getting you up to 28 miles before it needs another charge. But don’t worry – a dual braking system and skid-resistant shock absorbing pneumatic tyres will help if you reach a bump in the (figurative) road!

Segway Ninebot E45E electric folding scooter

This is another great e-scooter with a max speed of 15.5mph, a 300W motor and a range of 28 miles. And it’s got some other nifty features too – like the fact it can fold away in a cupboard or when you’re on public transport!
