Sage coffee machines are great. If you’ve got one, we expect you’ll be enjoying great-tasting coffee at home most days. Making every cup taste just right is easy if you do a few quick cleaning jobs. So in this guide, we’ll show you how to keep your coffee machine in great condition and running smoothly.

Your recommended daily cleaning routine

Let’s start with a few simple tasks that are worth doing each day. These small steps will keep your Sage working consistently - and your coffee tasting exactly as it should.

1. Flush the group head. After your last coffee of the day, take the portafilter off and run the group head for a few seconds. Some Sage coffee machines also have a ‘clean grouphead’ function that you can run. This washes away stray grounds that could bake onto the shower screen and affect the flavour of future brews.

2. Wipe and purge the steam wand. Milk residue builds up fast, especially on Sage machines that run hot. So, wait a few seconds after steaming for the wand to cool slightly, then wipe with a damp cloth. Now give it a quick blast of steam to clear the nozzle. It only takes a moment and stops dried milk from clogging the tip.

3. Empty the drip tray. Old water and coffee residue can start smelling quickly. Emptying the drip tray each day keeps things fresh and avoids messy overflows.

Your recommended weekly cleaning cycle

Once a week, we recommend that you give your Sage coffee machine a slightly deeper clean.

Backflush with a cleaning disc and tablet. Drop the silicone cleaning disc into your portafilter, add a Sage cleaning tablet, and lock it in. Start the cycle and let the machine run through it. Backflushing clears out oils and residue from the internal valves — spots you can’t reach but that make a real difference to pressure and taste.

Pay attention to the ‘Clean Me’ light. You’ll find this light on the front panel of your Sage coffee machine, clearly labelled ‘Clean Me’. Depending on your machine model, it’ll light up in white, blue, or amber. And when it turns on, it’s a signal from your machine that it’s time to run a cleaning cycle. To do this, simply use the cleaning disc and tablet, and let the machine complete its cleaning program.

How to descale your Sage coffee machine

Minerals in tap water can leave limescale in appliances, which affects water flow and can cause other issues. So it’s important to descale your Safe coffee machine regularly.

When to descale
How often you need to descale depends on your water hardness. If you live in a hard water area you might need to do it every month or two. Softer water areas might only need it a few times a year. Most Sage machines will give you a reminder, which is helpful if you’re not keeping track.

Three steps to successful descaling
Follow these simple steps to descale your Sage coffee machine:

1. Put your machine into descaling mode. Check your manual for the right buttons, because the descaling feature isn’t always labelled. In fact, you usually need to press a combination of buttons to activate descaling mode. For many models, this involves holding down the ‘Power’ button together with either the ‘1 Cup’ and ‘2 Cup’ buttons or the ‘Steam’ button for several seconds until the machine beeps or the lights start flashing.

2. Let the full cycle run, including the rinse. The entire descaling cycle usually takes about 15–20 minutes. During this time, you may notice the machine making some unusual noises as it pumps the solution through its internal components. It’s best not to interrupt the process, as stopping early may leave limescale or cleaning solution inside.

3. Refill the tank with fresh water and flush again. This should take around 5–10 minutes. While flushing, the machine gets rid of any remaining descaling solution. You might see cloudy water or small bubbles at first - this is perfectly normal, so don’t worry about it.

Top tip: always use a Sage-approved descaling solution. That way, you’ll be sure it’s a) safe for the machine and b) won’t leave any residue or chemicals behind.

Changing the water filter

The water filter quietly reduces scale and keeps your coffee tasting clean. Replacing it regularly also helps you go longer between descaling cycles.

How often to replace it
Every 1–3 months, depending on how often you brew and how hard your water is.

How to replace it
It’s a fairly quick process if you follow these steps in order:

  1. Remove the water tank.

  2. Take out the old filter.

  3. Soak the new filter in cold water for five minutes.

  4. Insert it into the holder and put the tank back.

  5. Run a quick flush of water before making coffee.

Cleaning the portafilter and shower screen

These parts carry a lot of coffee oils, so keeping them clean helps your coffee taste better.

Portafilter
Remove the basket and soak both parts in warm soapy water or a cleaning solution. Scrub gently with a small brush, then rinse and dry.

Shower screen
The shower screen spreads water evenly across the puck. Brush around it daily, and once a week remove it (usually just one screw), soak it, clean behind it, then reassemble.

Keeping the steam wand and knock box clean

Steam wand
Wipe and purge the wand after each use. If milk has dried on, soak the tip in hot water for a few minutes and scrub gently. Clean milk wands help keep milk texture consistent for lattes or cappuccinos.

Knock box
Empty it daily. Old coffee grounds can smell quickly, and a fast rinse keeps it fresh.

Model-specific tips

Most Sage machines follow the same basic cleaning routine, but a few have their quirks:

  • Barista Express. Brush the grinder and hopper weekly to remove old grounds. It helps flavours stay fresh, especially if you switch beans quite a lot.

  • Barista Pro. The display gives prompts for cleaning and descaling. Following them makes things straightforward.

  • Sage Oracle. Because it grinds and tamps automatically, wipe around the tamping area regularly. Use the automatic steam-wand cleaning cycle after every milk session.

  • Bambino/Bambino Plus. The auto-clean steam wand is handy. Let it run after each milk drink. Compact machines mean descaling is quick, though hard-water areas may need it slightly more often.

Cleaning products to avoid

When you’re cleaning your Sage coffee machine, there are a few things you definitely shouldn’t use, even if they seem like a quick fix.

  • Vinegar is too acidic and can damage seals, causing leaks. It also leaves behind that weird taste.

  • General-purpose descalers can harm your machine's internal parts and leave bad residues.

  • Household detergents leave soapy residues that ruin coffee flavour.

  • Abrasive sponges can scratch your machine. Stick to soft cloths for cleaning.

Basically, you should always use Sage-approved products to keep your machine running smoothly. These include Sage descaler for removing mineral build-up, and their specialised milk system cleaning powder for steam wands. If you’re ever in doubt, just check Sage’s website or ask in-store.

FAQs

My coffee tastes a bit dull - is that a cleaning issue?

Yes, could be. Old coffee oils, mineral deposits, or a clogged portafilter can affect flavour. Clean the portafilter, backflush the group head, and scrub the shower screen. This should restore the freshness and improve the overall taste of your coffee.

Is it okay to leave water in the tank overnight?

It’s better to replace the water daily to avoid bacterial growth and stale water. Old water can impact the flavour of your coffee, and leaving it in too long can also cause mineral build-up or even mould.

What if I’ve gone ages without cleaning?

Don’t worry! It’s never too late to start again. Simply backflush the machine, descale if necessary, and thoroughly clean all parts, like the portafilter, group head, and drip tray. Your machine will start working like new again with a little care.

Can I use any cleaning tablet or powder?

Only use Sage-approved cleaning tablets or powders. Other brands may contain harsh ingredients that can damage your machine or leave unwanted residues that negatively affect the flavour of your coffee.

How often should I clean my Sage coffee machine?

Aim for a full clean every 1-2 weeks, and always descale every 1-3 months. If you use your machine daily or have hard water, you may need to clean more often to ensure the best performance and taste.
