Got an iPhone 14? It’s important to know how to turn your phone off and restart it properly. But if you don’t know, you don’t know – so let us teach you this basic but essential skill!
We’ll walk you through the different ways you can turn off, restart, or force restart your iPhone 14. And we’ll also troubleshoot what to do if your iPhone won’t turn on. Let’s start with some button pressing action…
Using buttons to turn off iPhone 14
One of the simplest ways to turn off your iPhone 14 is by using the physical buttons on the device. This method is handy when your phone is functioning normally, and you're looking for a quick way to shut it down. Here’s how you can do it:
Press and hold the side button and volume button. On the right side of your iPhone 14, you’ll find the side button (which is also referred to as the power button). To power off your iPhone, you’ll need to press and hold this side button along with one of the volume buttons on the left side of your phone.
Wait for the 'slide to power off' option to appear. After a few seconds, a slider with the option 'slide to power off’ will appear on your screen.
Slide to power off. Now, just drag the slider from left to right to turn off your iPhone. Your screen should go dark after a moment.
That’s it. You’ve now turned off your iPhone 14 using the physical buttons.
To turn it back on, simply press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo. Once the logo appears, your phone will start booting up again.
Using settings to turn off iPhone 14
Prefer not to mess with the buttons? No problem. You can also power down your iPhone 14 using the Settings app. This method is especially useful if one of your buttons isn’t working, or if you simply prefer a button-free approach. Here’s how to do it:
Open the settings app. Head to your home screen or app library and look for the icon that looks like a gear.
Scroll down and tap 'General'. Once you're in the Settings app, scroll down a little until you find the General option. Tap it to open the General settings.
Tap 'Shut Down'. In the General settings menu, scroll all the way down and you’ll see the 'Shut Down' option. Tap it.
Slide to power off. Just like with the button method, the 'slide to power off' slider will appear. Slide it from left to right, and your iPhone will power down.
To turn your iPhone back on, press and hold the Side Button until the Apple logo appears, and you're back in business
Force restarting your iPhone 14
Sometimes your iPhone 14 might freeze or become unresponsive. In these cases, you might need to do something a little more drastic—a force restart. Don’t worry, this won’t erase any of your data. But it will force your phone to reboot, which can often solve a frozen or glitchy screen.
Here’s how to force restart your iPhone 14:
Quickly press and release the volume up button.
Quickly press and release the volume down button.
Press and hold the Side Button. Continue holding it even after the Apple logo appears on the screen.
After a few moments your iPhone will restart. Hopefully any unresponsive apps or glitches will have cleared up. Force restarts are quite often the quickest way of troubleshooting a frozen device without much hassle.
Troubleshooting: what to do if your iPhone 14 won’t turn on
Nothing's more frustrating than when your iPhone 14 refuses to turn on. If your device seems dead, don’t panic just yet. There are a few simple troubleshooting steps you can take, so let’s walk through what you can do if your iPhone 14 won’t power up.
Charging tips
Sometimes, the issue could be as simple as a drained battery. Try these charging tips to make sure your iPhone 14 gets the juice it needs to power back on:
Use the original charger. Make sure you’re using the charger that came with your iPhone or another Apple-certified charger. Non-certified chargers might not provide enough power, or they could be faulty.
Check your charging cable and adapter. Inspect both the cable and adapter for any signs of wear and tear, like frayed cords or bent connectors. Even a tiny break in the cord can cause your phone to not charge properly.
Let it charge for at least 30 minutes. Sometimes if your battery is completely dead, it might take a little while for your iPhone to show any sign of life. Plug it in and leave it alone for at least 30 minutes before trying to turn it on.
If your iPhone still won’t turn on after trying these steps, it may be time to move on to a more technical solution - recovery mode.
Entering recovery mode
If your iPhone 14 still won’t power on, or if it’s stuck on the Apple logo, you might need to put it into recovery mode. This method requires a computer (either a Mac or a PC), and it can help restore your iPhone to working order. Here’s how to do it:
Connect your iPhone 14 to your computer. Use a Lightning cable to connect your iPhone to a Mac or PC.
Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC). On a Mac running macOS Catalina or later, you’ll use Finder. For PCs or Macs running older macOS versions, open iTunes.
Force restart your iPhone to enter recovery mode. Now follow the same steps for force restarting your iPhone as we mentioned earlier. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Side Button until you see the recovery mode screen - this is usually a picture of a laptop and a cable.
Choose Update or Restore. Once your iPhone is in recovery mode, your computer will prompt you with options to Update or Restore your device. Choose Update first, which will reinstall iOS without erasing your data. If that doesn’t work, you can try Restore, but be aware that it will erase your data.
That’s all folks! You now know how to power your iPhone 14 off, restart it, and even troubleshoot if it won't turn on.
