Guide to using your fridge or freezer for the first time

If first time fridge setups give you the chills, keep cool and follow our handy guide

Before plugging your fridge freezer in and turning it on for the first time, there are a few things you can do to extend its lifespan and get the most out of it.

So, before you get started unpacking, it's worth going through the simple steps in this guide.

1. Let it stand

The first thing to think about is how long you need to ‘let it stand’.

Fridges and freezers are full of fluid that’s used to cool the compartments. In transit, your appliance gets shaken around, so it’s best to let everything settle before you plug it in.

If it was transported upright, give it at least an hour before you plug it in.

If it was transported on its side, turn it the right way up and leave it for at least four hours.

2. Quick clean

Because you’re going to be storing food in it, it’s a good idea to give it a clean before you use it.

You don’t need to go overboard, just a quick wipe down with warm water and washing up liquid in each cavity. Make sure it’s completely dry before putting the compartments back in.

3. Choose the right position

There’s probably already a space in your kitchen for your new appliance, but it needs to be placed to that there’s enough room for air to flow around it freely.

You need at least 5mm of space all around the fridge freezer, so try to place it centrally in the space you’ve got and make sure you don’t push it all the way back to the wall.

4. Turn it on

The last thing you need to do is plug it in. The first time it turns on, it’ll take a few hours to get down to the right temperature.

Some fridges and freezers will beep or show a green light when it’s at the correct temperature. If yours doesn’t a couple of hours should be enough time for your appliance to be ready to store food.
