Shark vacuum cleaners are great at keeping your home clean and fresh. But to make sure it keeps doing the job well, regular maintenance is key. Over time, dust, hair and debris can build up in various parts of your vac, which can lead to reduced suction, clogs and damage.

And the great thing about Shark vacuum cleaners is that they’re actually very simple to take apart and clean. In this simple to follow guide, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to keep your Shark vacuum in top condition, from disassembling and cleaning components to maintaining its filters and brush roll.

Following these simple tips and you’ll not only extend the lifespan of your vacuum but also keep it working best.

Why regular cleaning is important

So regular cleaning of your vacuum means optimal suction, which is vital for picking up dirt and debris. If you don’t clean your vacuum regularly, it can lose suction and cleaning power over time. And while powerful suction may not be so important on a wooden floor, it’s essential on surfaces like carpets and rugs.

Hygienic home

So regular vacuum cleaning also helps maintain the hygiene of your home. A clean vacuum effectively removes allergens and bacteria, especially buried in carpet fibres. Removing these regularly contributes to a healthier, better-smelling home. This is also really important for households with pets or family members with allergies.

Dust and dirt can build up in your vacuum in a few places, like the brush roll and filters. These buildups can cause clogs, which can reduce suction and strain the motor. The best way to keep your vacuum running smoothly is to prevent clogs from happening.

Saving money in the long-term

Keeping your Shark vacuum clean is key to making it last. A well-maintained vacuum is less likely to have mechanical issues or need repairs. This will save you money and make sure your vacuum is a reliable cleaning tool for years to come.

So let’s get to cleaning your vac…

Step 1: Unplug and disassemble the vacuum

Before you start cleaning, make sure your Shark vacuum is turned off. Press the power button (if cordless) and unplug (if wired) to be sure the vacuum is off. This is an important safety step and to prevents any accidental starts or electric shocks. We’ll guide you through how to take apart each bit of the Shark vacuum as we go through the process piece by piece.

Step 2: Empty the dust bin/ dust cup

1. Locate the dust bin release

First things first, find the dust bin release button on your Shark vacuum. It's usually hanging out on the side or bottom and might have a bin symbol on it. Give it a good press to set the dust bin free.

2. Gently remove the dust bin

Once the dustbin is released, it should just pop off. There’s no need to force it. Empty it into the bin, ensuring every last bit of dirt and debris is out.

3. Inspecting for stubborn debris

Once the dust bin is empty, take a quick peek to ensure there's no lingering dirt or hair. A gentle brush or a quick swipe with your fingers should take care of any stubborn bits, especially in those hard-to-reach spots.

4. Rinse the dust bin

If your Shark vacuum has a washable dust bin, simply rinse it under cold water. Make sure the water runs clear, showing you’ve removed all the dirt. Shake off any excess water and let the dust bin air dry before putting it back. You don’t want any water in your dust bin. This can damage your vacuum and be a collection spot for more clogs.

5. Reinsert the dust bin

Once you’ve cleaned and dried the dust bin, reinsert it back into the vacuum. Make sure it clicks into place. A clean and properly inserted dust bin keeps your Shark vacuum working.

Step 3: Clean or replace filters

Shark vacuums come with different types of filters, including HEPA and foam filters. Each type serves a unique purpose in trapping allergens and fine particles.

1. Locating the filter compartment

To access the filters, locate the filter compartment on your Shark vacuum. In the case of cordless models, it’s often found right above the dust cup, which you’ll need to remove from the vacuum with a release button. Open the compartment carefully to avoid any damage. This will give you easy access to the filters for cleaning or replacement.

2. Cleaning washable filters

You’ll probably find two filters, one on top of the other. With washable filters, you’re in luck. Simply rinse them under cold water until the water runs clear, gently squeeze out the excess water, and then let them air-dry for at least 24 hours.

3. Replacing non-washable filters

If you have a non-washable filter, simply use a soft brush to whisk away any dust or debris. If it's too clogged or damaged, it's time for a new one. Just refer to your user manual for the right model number and pick up a replacement filter on Shark’s website.

4. Ensuring proper reinstallation

Once your filters are clean and dry, or if you have installed new filters, make sure they are securely placed back into the filter compartment. A properly installed filter ensures the best airflow and vacuum performance. Fortunately, Shark filters are generally pretty forgiving and popping them back in is anything but fiddly.

5. Maintaining your filters

Regularly cleaning or replacing filters is crucial for maintaining your Shark vacuum’s performance. Aim to clean washable filters every 3-6 months, depending on usage. Replace non-washable filters as recommended by the manufacturer to keep your vacuum running efficiently.

Step 4: Remove hair and debris from the brush roll

To access the brush roll, find the release mechanism on the bottom of your Shark vacuum. It’s usually a button or lever. Press it to access the brush roll. Otherwise, you might find the brush roll protected with a plastic plate that can be removed by unlocking three different plastic catches – which can be opened with a coin or a large flathead screwdriver.

1. Removing tangled hair

You’ll likely see hair and string tangled around it. Use a pair of scissors to carefully cut away the hair and debris. Take your time to ensure you remove all the tangled material. This will help the brush roll spin freely.

2. Wiping the brush roll

Once you've cleared the brush roll of hair and particles, give it a once-over to ensure it's spotless. A soft brush or a damp cloth will do the trick. The cleaner the brush roll, the better the cleaning action.

3. Preventing future buildup

To keep your brush roll clean, it's as simple as giving it a quick once-over after each use. This small step will save you time and money in the long run.

Step 5: Clean the hose and attachments

Before you can put your Shark vacuum back together, it’s important to clean the hose and attachments thoroughly. Start by inspecting the hose for any visible blockages. If you find a clog, use a pipe cleaner or long handled brush to gently dislodge the debris. Be careful not to damage the hose in the process.

We’d advise against using water with the hose. We don’t want moisture running through the vacuum and knowing that the hose is actually dry before use is a bit of a gamble.

For the attachments, use a soft washing up brush to remove any dirt. If the attachments are totally made of plastic and contain no electronics, you can give them a rinse. Just be sure to let them air dry. This means that all parts are clean and free from dust and debris, and are just like new!

Step 6: Reassemble and maintain

Now put anything still disassembled back together. The good thing about Shark vacuums is they largely clip back together pretty easily, so no need to worry about missing screws!

Maintenance tips

  • Regularly empty the dust bin/ dust cup: Make sure to empty the dust cup after each use to prevent clogs and maintain suction power.

  • Clean the filter: Wash the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions, typically every 1-2 months, as it’s good for airflow.

  • Check and clean the brush roll: Inspect the brush roll regularly for tangled hair and debris, and remove any obstructions to keep it running smoothly.

  • Clean the hoses and tubes: Periodically check and clean the hoses and tubes to remove any blockages that can reduce suction.

  • Store properly: Store your vacuum in a dry, cool place to prevent damage and ensure it’s ready for the next use.

  • Use the right attachments: Use the appropriate attachments for different cleaning tasks to avoid overworking the vacuum and to achieve better results.

  • Replace worn parts: Replace worn or damaged parts, such as the brush roll or filters, to keep your vacuum functioning at its best.

  • Avoid overloading: Don’t overload the vacuum with too much dirt or debris at once, as this can strain the motor and reduce its lifespan.

  • Read the manual: Familiarise yourself with the user manual. You can usually find a copy online if you lost the booklet. Every vac is different, and there will be plenty of useful info to keep your model working at its best.
