A reliable internet connection is massively important for modern gaming. Whether you’re downloading updates, broadcasting streams or competing online, performance hinges on fast upload and download speeds, low latency, and solid broadband infrastructure. However, connectivity performance varies significantly across the UK, even between postcodes in the same city.

To reveal the nation’s hotspots, we created the Gaming Connectivity Index. We assessed representative outcodes and combined the highest available download and upload speeds, FTTP full-fibre latency, and distance from London into an Overall Connectivity Score. The index incorporates the latter through a latency penalty to reflect how geographical distance from London servers can affect connectivity performance.

Read on to discover the UK’s best-connected areas, top-speed locations, and surprising regional performance gaps.

Which UK areas have the best gaming connectivity?

To determine the overall rankings, the Gaming Connectivity Index combines key factors including download speeds, upload speeds, FTTP latency, and geographical distance from London (as most key servers are based in London) into a single score out of 100.

Bradford claims the top spot in the national index with an overall score of 70.89. The city benefits from reliable full-fibre infrastructure that balances stable 12ms FTTP latency with dependable bandwidth availability across sampled areas, with the West having the slowest download and upload speeds. This consistent baseline performance prevents extreme network drops, giving Bradford gamers the UK's most reliable overall connection profile.

Securing second place, Manchester scores 67.95, driven by hyper-fast infrastructure capable of reaching up to 10,000 Mbps download and upload speeds in key sub-regions. Paired with a low average FTTP latency of just 9ms, local players experience swift game downloads alongside real-time responsiveness in competitive multiplayer matches.

Liverpool scores 67.63, driven by strong city-wide full-fibre coverage. It maintains a steady 11ms FTTP latency alongside consistent broadband speeds, providing local players with low-delay gameplay and reliable bandwidth during peak evening hours.

Coventry’s location in the Midlands minimises physical distance penalties from central servers in London, resulting in a stable 11ms latency and an overall score of 65.02. The city's balanced network performance ensures smooth online gaming without major connectivity bottlenecks.

Hull is known for its unique independent full-fibre network infrastructure, helping it to score fifth with a 62.27. Postcodes in the North, West, North West, and outer suburbs can reach speeds up to 10,000 Mbps with 12ms latency. This enables rapid game installs and smooth livestreaming capabilities for local content creators.

What makes an area good for gaming?

Seamless online gameplay depends on a strong regional network working alongside your gaming PC’s hardware. Pairing reliable broadband infrastructure with a capable gaming rig allows for smoother, lag-free sessions.

Download speed

Fast download speeds cut down on waits for large game installs, patches, and online content, but high-performance PC storage is equally vital. A fast connection means less time on loading screens and more time in the game.

Upload speed

Upload speed dictates how fast data travels from your device to the web, making it critical for multiplayer matches, streaming, and content creation. Without adequate upload bandwidth, your stream can suffer from severe frame drops and lag spikes during peak hours.

Latency

Measured in milliseconds (ms), latency is the delay between your input and the game responding on screen. Keeping this delay as close to zero as possible ensures your split-second reactions translate directly into gameplay without frustrating lag.

Connectivity infrastructure

Full-fibre (FTTP) broadband delivers data through modern fibre-optic cables rather than legacy copper wiring. This infrastructure provides the high bandwidth, stability, and ultra-low latency essential for reliable online gaming during high-traffic household use.

Which UK areas have the worst gaming connectivity?

While top-performing hubs enjoy seamless online play, broadband performance varies drastically across the UK. Several major areas score much lower because of sluggish average speeds, higher latency, and greater distance from London servers.

Plymouth sits at the bottom of the national index with an overall score of 40.46. Being 190 miles from London imposes a noticeable geographical distance penalty, while an average FTTP latency of 13ms adds delay to online responses. Combined with slower coverage in outer suburbs like PL8 (75 Mbps), local gamers may face bottlenecks during large game downloads.

Newcastle upon Tyne takes the second-lowest spot with a score of 42.06. Located 250 miles from London, the city incurs a significant distance-based latency penalty alongside a 14ms FTTP ping. Severe network disparities between high-speed areas (NE15 at 5,500 Mbps) and central postcodes constrained to legacy 80 Mbps connections weigh down its city-wide score.

At 320 miles from London, Belfast is the furthest city from London in the study and scores only 42.93. Paired with a peak FTTP latency of 18ms, local competitive players experience higher delay between inputs and server responses than mainland alternatives.

Despite maintaining a low 10ms FTTP latency, Bristol’s ranking is held back by uneven speed distribution, allowing it to only score 46.41. While specific postcodes access gigabit lines, large residential areas sit on standard 1,000–1,800 Mbps tiers, slowing speeds for gamers at crucial moments.

Nottingham rounds out the bottom five with a score of 47.02. Although outcodes in the outer suburbs (NG15) reach up to 10,000 Mbps, overall city performance drops significantly in central (NG1) and south-eastern areas (NG2), where speeds plummet to just 15 Mbps on lingering copper infrastructure.

Your gaming PC matters too

Good connectivity is only half the battle when building a strong gaming setup. While your location dictates internet quality, your PC's internal hardware determines how well games actually render and run.

Choosing the right gaming PC

The key components of a gaming PC, including the CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD storage, directly dictate system performance, frame rates and loading times. While your broadband connection handles online data transfer, high-spec hardware ensures demanding games render smoothly without stuttering.

Connectivity vs PC performance

Your internet connection governs how quickly your device communicates with game servers, while your PC hardware powers local game rendering and frame generation. Strong connectivity cannot fix low frame rates caused by an underpowered GPU, just as an elite gaming PC cannot eliminate lag spikes caused by poor regional connectivity.

Building a better gaming setup

Creating an optimal setup comes down to treating your gear and network as a complete package. An expert at Currys says, “You can have gigabit broadband, but if your monitor lacks a high refresh rate or your GPU bottlenecks, you won't feel that speed. Aligning your PC hardware, display, accessories, and network ensures your split-second reactions actually translate into gameplay."

Ready to level up your network and gaming setup?

While regional infrastructure impacts online performance, optimising your local setup is just as vital.
