Ready to hop on a brand new e-scooter? We don’t blame you.
E-scooters are already widely available in lots of other countries, like the US, Singapore and France. But the UK’s been a little slow to catch on. That’s because for a long time it was illegal to ride e-scooters on roads or pavements.
Although privately owned e-scooters still aren’t welcome on the streets, rental companies like Lime and Voi have been allowed to operate in certain towns and cities. That means if your area’s part of an e-scooter rental trial, you’re good to go. And if you want to grab an e-scooter of your own, that’s allowed too – as long as you only ride it in privately owned spaces.
But, even with the restrictions, there are a whole host of reasons to hop on a scooter:
They’re easy to take with you
Until the law changes, we can’t use private scooters for commuting, but that doesn’t stop you from taking your scooter on an adventure. If you know someone who will let you ride your e-scooter on their property, you can still have a lot of fun. And most e-scooters are foldable and light enough to pick up and take with you!
They’re greener than a car
E-scooters are run by (no surprises) an electric motor. So you can have your fun without worrying about the fumes.
Fewer cars on the road in cities also means safer (rental) scooting and less traffic. So more than the obvious air pollution, we’ll also see a decline in noise pollution and congestion. Sounds pretty good to us!
They’re really smart!
Get yourself an e-scooter and most will come with an app that gives you so many options. How far have you scooted today? What was your top speed and how much battery do you have left? Bike locks may use fiddly keys, but can you unlock them from your phone? Nope. If you’re a tech fan, e-scooters just seem to make sense.
They’re less effort than a bike
Cycling’s a great way to exercise. But sometimes that’s not your biggest priority after a gruelling workday. An e-scooter’s more get-up-and-go, less gear-up-and-pedal. Shower optional.
Plus, bike’s take up a fair bit of space. Most people who have been in a flat share with a cyclist can relate. A scooter is much more compact, easily tucked away in a cupboard until you’re ready to ride.
They’ll still keep you fit
Yes it’s not the over huff-and-puff exercise of a bicycle… but an e-scooter will still help you burn calories.
That’s because staying upright on a scooter requires balance. All those tiny muscle adjustments to keep you from falling can tone your core, in a similar way to a gentle yoga practice.
They’re a lot of fun
There’s no getting around this one- scooting just looks fun. Maybe it’s the souped-up childhood nostalgia, maybe it’s going fast while doing virtually nothing. Either way, it’s giving us e-scooter envy.
And that goes double when we see this video from Undialed on learning 20 easy scooter tricks. It’s fair to say though that a rental company probably wouldn’t be too happy with you pulling a wheelie on their scooters.
So, if you’ve got a private open space available, why not get your own e-scooter?
