Product information
The Sigma 150-600 mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM C Telephoto Zoom Lens offers a similar specification to the 150-600 mm f/5-6.3 Sports lens, yet with a lighter and more compact construction for greater versatility.

Sharp results

The 150-600 mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary Lens offers excellent optical performance thanks to a FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements which helps to reduce chromatic aberration for high quality results.

Helping you to capture sharp images, the 150-600 mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary Lens features an OS (Optical Stabiliser) with two modes – Mode 1 for general photography and Mode 2 for sports and other subjects that require panning.

Compact and weatherproof

Lightweight and more compact than its Sports cousin, the Contemporary Lens is easy to handle, allowing you to shot handheld for longer periods of time. The detachable tripod socket offers stability when you need it.

With a water and oil-repellent coating, the surface of the lens can be easily wiped clean, even in harsh conditions. A dustproof and splashproof mount means your lens is protected from the elements.

Fast and quiet shooting

Autofocus is fast, quiet and smooth thanks to the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), while manual focus override allows you to quickly make any adjustments.

Lock in the zoom at any focal length thanks to the zoom lock switch for stable shooting at all angles and long exposures.

Ideal for out in the field, the Sigma 150-600 mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM C Telephoto Zoom Lens is an excellent choice for shooting wildlife, landscape and casual sports photographers.

(The following written after 8 days of hard field testing on a wildlife holiday shoot in the northern isles - previously used a Canon 300 mm F4 L lens for 10 years & occasionally have borrowed Canon's 400 F5.6 L, 300 F2.8 L IS, 600 F4 IS & 400 F4 DO IS lenses.) Excellent build quality for the price, matching that of Canon 'L' glass products while adding even further functionality over its rivals, such as the ability to update the lens firmware/focusing accuracy by use of the lens 'dock' (an additional modest purchase). The ability to extend the zoom range by use of the 'trombone'-style pull mechanism (in addition to the standard zoom ring) is incredibly useful in the field when hand-holding the lens (briefly as it's v heavy!) as the user can then keep supporting the lens & change its focal length w/o upsetting the balance provided by the supporting hands (which would occur if using the zoom ring). The zoom lock mechanism is v useful and essential for preventing 'zoom creep' at the selected permitted zoom ranges when pointing the lens up or down. Lens works well hand-held in short spells and feels light when slung over shoulder with a bespoke strap support (mine by Joby). Focus speed is excellent - literally 'hypersonic'! Only telephotos of extreme weight (and price) will outperform this lens for aperture, sharpness, and image quality. Surprisingly, fits well into a modest Manfrotto 'bee' backpack. Finally, the Sigma website demo videos, & others esp from USA on YouTube, were useful for initial set-up. I look fwd to 'mark II' from Sigma in a few years time (see 'cons')!
Very little could be improved w/o modifying the portability/weight/price. Personally I'd like an additional smaller-diameter screw thread in the fixed mounting base-plate to enable lighter consumer-style monopods to be screwed in. I also added a removable Manfrotto base plate (14. x 5.5 cm) to the lens' own base-plate, enabling me to gain a better balance when handholding the lens at max zoom extension & leaving it ready to attach in a few seconds when needed to a Manfrotto 701RC2 tripod head or type 393 monopod head mounted on a carbon tripod). The essential protective lens hood works well but is very heavy (metal) - I'd suggest that Sigma design/provide an optional lightweight alternative for owners to order up. Finally, the provided fabric lens objective cover fits a little loosely & ideally needs a tag or suchlike to reversibly connect it to the hood somehow to prevent the nice padded cover being lost in the field (a pain in the rain, although using a removable lens 'coat' helps of course too to prevent splashes on the objective).
Obviously this is a 'dense' heavy lens that is easiest used when mounted on a mono/tripod, & this mass issue will deter some users comparing it with for example Canon's 100-400 L mark II zoom (latter better for street/busy environments and where weight/packaging is a deciding issue, e.g. on some flights).
