Avowed is an upcoming action RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the brains behind hit titles like Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds. With a first reveal back in 2020, this highly anticipated first-person fantasy game will have you casting spells and slashing enemies on a dangerous mission across a mysterious land — where a soul-corrupting plague is spreading like wildfire.

Let's find out more about what this big adventure game has in store. From key details like the release date and which platforms you can play it on, to the game's main characters and its cool combat system. Check out the Avowed story trailer below, unveiled at the recent 2024 Xbox Games Showcase:

Avowed will be released on 18 February 2025. It won't be too long until you can start your epic quest across the Living Lands! Make sure to bookmark this page to stay in the loop with all things Avowed, and keep an eye on our upcoming games page too.

How much will Avowed cost?

As Avowed is a huge cinematic game, you can expect a price at the upper end of the scale. Avowed - Standard Edition will cost £69.99 on console and £59.99 on Steam (if you’re a PC player). While Avowed - Premium Edition will cost £89.99 on console and £79.99 for the digital download via Steam. The premium version offers:

  • Everything in Avowed - Standard Edition.

  • Up to 5 days early access.

  • Premium Skin Packs (2 sets of bonus skins for each of your companions).

Can I pre-order Avowed?

You can pre-order Avowed - Premium Edition Steelbook from Currys right now. As it’s the premium version of the game, this means you’ll have the game delivered to your doorstep on 13 February 2025 — that’s five days earlier than the general release. Avowed platforms and crossplay

Avowed will be exclusive to Xbox Series X|S consoles and Windows PCs only. Sorry PS5 and Nintendo Switch players — but you can still explore immersive fantasy worlds in acclaimed console games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

How to play Avowed

Avowed is a massive first-person RPG set in the land of Eora. This is the very same universe in Pillars of Eternity — another big fantasy title from Obsidian. So, if you've played that before, this game should feel pretty familiar. Your character will set sail from Aedyr to the Living Lands, an untamed wild frontier at the edge of the known world that's rumoured to be suffering from a spiritual plague.

As the envoy of Aedyr and at the request of the Emperor, your character must find the root of the so-called 'Dream Scourge' and put an end to its spread. This is just the tip of the iceberg though, as there's an even deeper rot lying beneath the island's surface that threatens to destroy everything.

It'll be up to you to uncover its secrets and save the Living Lands so its survivors can shape its future. But not all is what it seems, with your character discovering a personal connection to the environment as they explore it — like the island itself is calling out to you for help. Will this leave you with a side to choose? Maybe…

There are plenty of enemies to defeat on your travels across various vibrant landscapes, all with their own ecosystems that throw up their own challenges too. You'll have to wield swords in hand-to-hand combat, shoot arrows and pistols to attack from afar, and summon up spells with magic wands to trap, freeze and burn your foes — ranging from infected bears and lizard people to creepy skeleton soldiers!

How many hours of gameplay will Avowed have?

According to a recent article from TechRadar, Avowed will offer around 20 hours of gameplay. This is similar in length to Obsidian's The Outer Worlds, with the game's director Carrie Patel saying: "in terms of both the scope and the structure of the game, I’d look to The Outer Worlds for a pretty good point of comparison."

What are Avowed’s main characters?

Not much has been revealed about the main character you’ll be controlling in Avowed. But in an IGN interview, Carrie Patel said that they will be either a human or elf, which are the two main races that make up the population of the Aedryr Empire. This means you should be able to choose their race at the start of the game and a name.

You'll have some companions helping you along the way too, including an eccentric wizard and a brave former mercenary. They'll have unique abilities you can take advantage of to get the upper hand over trickier enemies.

What Avowed features are player-customisable?

You should be able to customise your character's looks and weaponry throughout Avowed. And according to gameplay director Gabriel Paramo, there will be a flexible combat system that allows you to tweak and quickly "mix and match your loadout" during combat.

So, you can play exactly how you want, whether that's charging into a battle with sword and shield, shooting with dual pistols to control encounters mid-range, or paralysing enemies with spells.

What are the different Avowed game mode options?

Avowed will be all about the main story mode from what we've seen so far. But there will definitely be a variety of side quests, including a mission where you'll come across the bodies of fallen soldiers in rocky Shatterscarp — the third region you'll explore. You'll have to find out who's at fault and make various tough decisions throughout your expedition. Don't trust anyone!

Will Avowed have a multiplayer mode?

Like other Obsidian games, Avowed will be a single-player adventure. It was originally planned to be a co-op RPG, with Obsidian's founder Feargus Urquhart admitting in the company's 20th Anniversary documentary series that he pushed hard for multiplayer early on. But Obsidian abandoned this idea after deciding that they "weren't focused on the things we're best at."
