Welcome to 1600s Japan. Set in the lawless northern land of Ezo, you play as Atsu – a mercenary on a path of bloody vengeance. After your family are brutally slain by a gang of outlaws, it’s up to you to hunt them down one by one. With names like ‘The Snake’ and ‘The Spider’, your targets use intimidation – and nightmarish looking masks – to strike fear into their opponents. Work out their identity. Find them. And make them pay.

To track and defeat your foes, you won’t be alone. You’ll team up with a cast of unlikely allies who’ll aid you in your quest. First up are the legendary sensei. These weapon masters will train you in the arts of the deadliest tools of the day – from spears and early rifles to dual katanas. Their knowledge will unlock special abilities too, like unblockable strikes, which will give you a huge edge in combat. And from the trailers, it even looks like you’ll join forces with an actual wolf. Yep, for real.

There’s beauty among the blood and mud though. As you explore the region around Mount Yotei (on foot, or on your trusty steed), you’ll roam through plenty of stunning environments. Snow capped mountains. Lush, flowing grasslands. Fields full of colourful wildflowers. They’re all here, and they all give the game an epic art style that could be straight out of a period painting.

Jump into the driver’s seat and drift through wild dimensions in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. From futuristic cities filled with bright neon lights to Jurassic jungles overrun with dinosaurs — every course in this game is a high-speed battleground full of surprises.

On each lap, the track will change when the leader zips through a ‘Travel Ring’. Who knows which CrossWorld you’ll get teleported to next! Then after the second tour, you’ll return to the original circuit for the thrilling final lap. But don’t expect things to look the same as before. That’s because loads of aspects will change to keep you guessing right up to the finish line.

You can play as all your Sonic universe faves in CrossWorlds too, including the main man himself, Knuckles, Shadow, and many more. Plus, with the most extensive customisation in the Sonic Racing series to date, you can create your very own one-of-a-kind car. Pick the vehicle type that suits your driving style and tinker with all kinds of parts, gadgets, decals — even a signature horn sound! Then show off your ride and racing skills against other players online or in single-player Grand Prix.

Silent Hill F takes the classic KONAMI series and turns things on its head. You’ll be transported to 1960s Japan to the town of Ebisugaoka – a remote place, that, if we’re honest, is the perfect place to set a horror game. And it gets even creepier. Especially after it’s blanketed with a thick, mysterious fog that appears out of nowhere. But this isn’t just a bit of mist. There are hidden horrors lurking in its depths.

You play as Shimizu Hinako, a local student having a day from hell. Quite literally. As the streets and shops fall, ahem, silent, you’ll have to do whatever you can to survive. And that isn’t so straightforward. Twisted monsters roam the narrow alleys, and if they spot you, you’ll be forced to fight. Armed with all kinds of melee weapons (we’ve spotted metal pipes, and even a samurai spear in the trailers so far), you’ll get up close and personal, dodging vicious swipes while launching your own attacks.

You’ll have to use your brain too though. The Silent Hill franchise has always had its fair share of fiendish puzzles to solve. And in F, they’ll test the old grey matter to its limits. Expect complex contraptions, missing keys and cryptic notes aplenty. So, pay attention. It might just save your life.

Bombastic action. A wild story. And a whole new crew of Vault Hunters. Oh, and guns. Lots and lots of guns. That’s Borderlands 4 in a nutshell. On the planet Kairos, you’ll seek your fame and fortune while facing off against the Timekeeper – a dastardly dictator who’ll crush anyone in their way. Throw in a world changing disaster, and this place is about to get manic.

If you’ve played Borderlands before, you’ll know there’s stacks of legendary loot to find. And in the latest instalment, there’s a whole new arsenal to play with. These weapons are seriously whacky though – let’s just say you won’t find them in the likes of Call of Duty. You’ll need to pair these futuristic firearms with a skill-tree of unique powers. Otherwise, your revolution isn’t going to get very far.

To even the odds, you can always squad up with other Vault Hunters in 4-player online co-op. Or, if you prefer, roam alone on your trusty hover bike, and explore colossal mountains, scorching hot deserts and other dangerous environments. Hey, it means more loot for yourself I guess!

Mafia: The Old Country takes things back to the start. In this prequel, you’ll discover the old-timey origins of the Mafia themselves. As Enzo Favara, you’re dropped into the dangerous criminal underworld of 1900s Sicily. It won’t be easy to become a fully-fledged made man though. Working for the legendary Torrisi crime family, you’ll have to prove your loyalty to be sworn into the inner circle. And the Don is a hard man to please.

Sicily may look beautiful. But bubbling under the surface, the mob battles with its rivals for control of the island. Turf wars, vendettas and treachery are just another day at the office for this lot. Which means you’ll need to defend yourself. Your trusty stiletto blade is a lifesaver in close quarters scraps. While sawn-off shotguns, handguns and other period-authentic firearms will give you a deadly edge in any shootout.

It wouldn’t be a proper Mafia tale without a high-speed chase or two either. Mount up and gallop across dusty plains and farmers’ fields on your trusty steed. Or, for even more horsepower, pursue your target in a brand-new automobile. How far will you go to uphold your oath?

Back in 2006, we were blown away by Gears of War. Its gritty, cinematic battles against the Locust horde were thrilling, bloody and downright bonkers. Now, with Gears of War: Reloaded, you get to relive – or play for the very first time – one of the best third-person action shooters ever made. What’s more, PlayStation players can finally get their hands on a copy too.

Marcus Fenix’s mission now looks way better than you remember. Fully remastered textures, 4K assets and upgraded lighting, shadows and reflections make every shootout even more immersive. While the 7.1 surround sound support puts you slap bang in the centre of the story. We reckon that chainsaw on the iconic Lancer rifle is sounding deadlier than ever.

You won’t have to face the never-ending tide of Locust alone though. Campaign co-op (online and in split-screen) sees you squad up with your mates. While multiplayer firefights let you pit your skills against the very best the COG has to offer. Oh, and because there’s now full cross play support, you’ll be able to play together across every kind of platform. War-some!

Defend humanity from a dangerous evil in Lost Soul Aside, an upcoming action-adventure RPG from Ultizero Games. You’ll step into the shoes of Kaser, a skilled swordsman on a quest to rescue his sister from the clutches of dimensional invaders known as Voidrax.
