The Final Fantasy VII remake project looks to be in full swing. Rebirth will be the second game in the planned trilogy based on the legendary PS1 title from 1997 — making it a direct sequel to 2020's Final Fantasy VII Remake. Although developers Square Enix state that Rebirth is a “standalone game that welcomes fans and newcomers alike.” It's a little bit confusing, but stick with us...
In this epic JRPG, you'll guide the mercenary Cloud Strife and his loyal companions on a journey across the planet. They’re on a mission to stop the megacorporation Shinra from exploiting the world’s ‘Lifestream’ as an energy source. But you'll have to watch out for the ruthless swordsman Sephiroth too — who's hellbent on attaining godhood by merging with the planet's life essence.
We’ve got the full lowdown on this upcoming game from the iconic action-adventure series. Covering everything from the release date and price to the reimagined gameplay and cinematic storytelling.
What is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s release date?
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be released worldwide on February 29th, 2024. You won't have to wait too long to play the "Most Anticipated Game" of 2024 — an honour FF7 Rebirth recently picked up at The Game Awards 2023.
How much will Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth cost?
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is launching exclusively on PlayStation 5 and will cost £69.99. The clips we've seen so far look out of this world, so you’ll be getting a lot of game for your money. And it's so big that Square Enix have had to split it out onto two discs for the physical version. Whoa…
Can I pre-order Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
Pre-order a physical copy of FF7 Rebirth from Currys right now and you’ll get up to 3 months Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and Apple Fitness+ free! Or pre-purchase digital versions of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth from the official PlayStation and Square Enix stores instead.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth platforms
You won't be able to play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on anything other than a PS5 on the day it’s released. A port of the 2020 prequel made its way onto Windows eventually though, so we might see Rebirth show up on Steam at some point down the line.
How to play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth picks up straight after where 2020’s Remake left off. Cloud and his comrades have just escaped from the dystopian metropolis of Midgar and must now venture across the vast planet in search of Sephiroth — a fallen hero from Cloud’s past who was presumed dead.
But in their hunt to find the elite soldier, the clan get tangled up in an even bigger conflict that will decide the fate of the world. Culminating in the group’s eventual journey to The Forgotten Capital.
And yes, you can play Rebirth and make sense of it all without having to complete Final Fantasy VII Remake first. Square Enix states that the game fits in "a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience." But if you do want to know what went down in Remake, then you can use Rebirth’s in-game menu to watch a story recap video. Now that’s a nice touch.
You’ll get to explore beautiful and expansive regions full of character in FF7 Rebirth — combining strategic thinking with fast-paced action combat. Sprint across huge grassy plains or hop on a Chocobo (a large bird-like creature) to speed up your adventure. Plus, there’s loads of futuristic vehicles to get behind the wheel of too. We’re looking at you, Starfield…
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is also filled with various new characters and elements, along with “rewarding side content and mini games.” So, it sounds like it’ll be much more than just a stage-by-stage partial remake of the ’97 classic.
How many hours of gameplay will Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have?
You’re not supposed to beat Final Fantasy games in a day. They’re big, bold, and really give you your money’s worth. According to reports, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be providing around 40 hours of playtime for the main story mode alone. That’s about the same as Final Fantasy VII Remake.
And to get all those side quests, mini games, and open-world extras completed — you’ll be looking at more than 100 hours. We reckon it’ll take a few marathon sessions to get to that 100% stat anytime soon.
What are Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s main factions/characters?
The Final Fantasy franchise boasts a massive cast of characters. With a history that stretches all the way back to 1987, it’s no surprise. In Rebirth, you’ll primarily take control of Cloud Strife — a former soldier of Shinra turned mercenary who defected to assist the eco-terrorist group Avalanche.
You must guide Cloud in his fight against the Shinra Corporation — the immoral rulers of Midgar who have been draining the planet of its resources and weaponising its ethereal power source called the Lifestream.
You'll have a strong crew of Avalanche members backing you up though, including iconic heroes like Barret, Tifa, Aerith and Red XIII. Deepen their relationships, and you’ll get to unleash deadly team-based combos to defeat enemies in record time.
Cloud's arch nemesis Sephiroth has his own evil intentions too. He's a former soldier of Shinra just like Cloud but possesses superhuman powers that make him the most formidable of foes. He wants to exploit the planet’s Lifestream to become a god, with an apocalyptic plan in mind that could devastate the world. Uh oh.
What Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth features are player-customisable?
Final Fantasy 7 Remake didn’t offer much in terms of customisation. But some rumours are suggesting that Rebirth will let you get a little more creative with your characters. Apparently, you’ll get to find a few “very well hidden” outfits across the planet that’ll allow you to personalise Cloud and hopefully the rest of his gang too.
What are the different Final Fantasy VII Rebirth game mode options?
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth revolves around its intriguing main story. But there are reports indicating that an all-new Dynamic difficulty mode will be introduced — designed to adjust the skills of your enemies based on how well you play the game. That sounds like it should really challenge the most seasoned FF players.
The standard difficulty settings from Final Fantasy VII Remake will also be carried over to Rebirth. This means that you'll get to set Easy, Normal, or Hard modes. And the Classic mode should be available too, which will appeal to players after the nostalgic turn-based combat style from the original 1997 game.
Will Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have a multiplayer mode?
No, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is very much a single-player affair. But your clan of combatants will always be there to lend a helping hand when the going gets tough.
