In November 2020, Sony raised the bar for console gaming with the launch of their PS5. Offering next-level performance, stunning graphics, and an epic lineup of games — it’s no wonder Sony’s sold over 75 million units worldwide so far.
That staggering number includes sales of the PS5 Slim, the sleeker version of the original system that hit the shelves in late 2023. Available with a disc drive or as a Digital Edition (just like the OG PlayStation 5), the Slim is now the current model and replaced the bulkier base console. It’s a bit confusing, we know — especially with the PS5 Pro joining the lineup recently!
If you're deciding between a second-hand PS5 and a newer Slim model, we’ll clear up any confusion you might have. That’s because we’ve compared their designs, performance, features, and more.

Design and size
The original PS5 was a beast. While some gamers loved its big and bold design, many found it to be just a bit too much. If you were tight on space under your TV or on your desk, then adding a PS5 may have required a big rejig of your entertainment setup.
And that’s why Sony launched the PlayStation 5 Slim a few years later. It kept the cool and futuristic design of the original but, as its name suggests, was slimmed down to make it a better fit for most homes. Not only is it 30% smaller than the 2020 model, but 24% lighter too — with the PS5 Slim Digital Edition weighing only 2.6kg.
Did you know?
The release of the PS5 Slim marked the end of the original PS5, which was phased out after 2023. But for previous PlayStation generations, Sony would introduce a slim model and continue to sell the original console.
Performance and specs
The PS5 Slim might be smaller than the original PlayStation 5, but it’s just as mighty. It packs the same key hardware, so the Slim runs PlayStation games just as well as the OG — in stunning 4K at a rapid 120Hz refresh rate. With HDR support and immersive Tempest 3D Audio to boot.
It’s also got the same whopping 16GB of GDDR6 memory. So, the PS5 Slim can fire up your fave titles in a flash and keep them running smoothly.
Storage and expandability
The PS5 Slim comes with a 1TB hard drive, while the first PlayStation 5 had 825GB of storage onboard. That means the newer console has more room for your games, movies, and music.
But both models can have their storage expanded with M.2 solid-state drives (SSDs) — in case extra space is needed. You can upgrade your gaming with the Crucial T500 M.2 SSD, which adds another terabyte or two and even loads games up to 16% faster than a PS5’s standard built-in SSD.
Features and ports
The PS5 Slim features a detachable Ultra-HD Blu-ray disc drive — perfect for Digital Edition owners who might want to upgrade later. Say you’ve got a friend with some amazing games you’d like to borrow. Just buy the removable disc drive, attach it, and voilà. You’ll be able to play disc-based games, Blu-rays, and DVDs.
The PS5 Slim also replaced the launch-spec PS5’s front USB-A port with a second USB-C port. It’s a small but solid upgrade, as USB-C’s a more modern connection standard that offers faster data transfer speeds. It’s compatible with the most recent PS5 accessories too, and lets you easily charge a couple of PS5 controllers at the same time.
Price and availability
The PS5 Slim costs £479.99, which is about the same price the 2020-spec PS5 was at launch. While the PS5 Slim Digital Edition comes in at £429.99 — slightly more than the original Digital Edition console.
Since the PS5 Slim has been the default PlayStation for about 18 months, remaining stock of the original PS5 has sold out. That means you can only buy it second-hand (although the odd “new and boxed” listing shows up in some places).
But if you’ve got some spare cash and want the best PS5, there’s the PlayStation 5 Pro to consider. For £699.99, you get a more powerful processor and there’s even some Ai in the mix to take your favourite games to the next level. Sharper visuals, improved lighting, smoother frame rates, you name it. It also has Wi-Fi 7, the latest gen of Wi-Fi wireless tech that reduces lag and congestion when playing online.
Which one should you buy?
Unless you want to save some money, the PS5 Slim is a no-brainer. It’s more compact without compromising performance, has 175GB of extra built-in storage, and the Digital Edition can be upgraded with the attachable disc drive later should you need it.
The PlayStation 5 Slim is also more widely available, making it much easier to find than a pre-owned PS5. And if you buy one new, you’ll get a one-year warranty from Sony should the worst happen.
