The Last of Us Part II Remastered platforms and crossplay

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is strictly a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Sorry, PC players, there’s no sign of it coming to Steam or the Epic Games Store just yet.

How to play The Last of Us Part II Remastered

The Last of Us Part II Remastered has exactly the same gameplay as the original PS4 version of the game, plus lots more. Expect improved graphics, new modes, and behind-the-scenes features that will deepen your understanding of the story and the game.

New to the game? Here’s what it’s all about….

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is a third-person survival horror game where you travel across a post-apocalyptic landscape battling zombie-like creatures and hostile humans.

Platforming elements are involved, so prepare to run, jump and leap over obstacles to gain an advantage during combat. You can also navigate some areas by horse or boat.

Talking of combat, you can attack enemies directly, use ‘stealth’ to try and attack undetected, or simply sneak past them. Weapons include rifles, pistols and bows, and more basic items like machetes and hammers. You’ll be able to upgrade weapons at workbenches, and craft new equipment like health kits and Molotov cocktails. Good luck!

Who are the main characters?

You’ll play the characters of Ellie or Abby throughout the game. Here’s a quick introduction:

Ellie is the tough and witty survivor of the first ‘The Last of Us' game. She’ll go through a rollercoaster of emotions this time round, as she faces both the horrors of the infected and the challenges of human relationships.

Abby is a complex character whose path quickly intertwines with Ellie's. She’s determined and can take care of herself physically. But what exactly is it that motivates her? Is she good, bad, or somewhere in between? You’ll have to play the game to find out!

But that’s not all. In the new No Return survival mode you’ll get to play new characters like Dina, Jesse, Lev, Tommy and more, each with their own unique traits and playing styles. More on that new mode further below.

What’s the story?

We’ll keep this fairly brief because we don’t want to give away any spoilers. But the game begins with Joel, the protagonist from the first game, living in a settlement with Ellie. When tragedy strikes, we start to follow Ellie’s quest through the zombie and fungus infected world.

The narrative weaves between past and present, and we get to learn more about Joel’s actions in the first game. Ellie's story collides with Abby's story, in emotional and surprising ways. We’re saying no more.

How many hours of gameplay will The Last of Us Part II remastered have?

Using the non-remastered version of The Last of Us Part II as a guide, you’ve got about a day. Or to be more precise, if you focus on the main objectives of the game, it’ll take you at least 24 hours of gameplay to get to the end. Anything less than that is seriously impressive.

If you’re a completist, prepare to set aside at least 42 hours to reach all the objectives and achieve 100% completion.

What are the different Last of Us Part II remastered game mode options?

The biggest new addition will be a survival mode called No Return. Naughty Dog says it’s “designed to let players prove their mettle in randomized encounters and experience The Last of Us Part II’s combat in a fresh experience.”

Basically, you’ll need to survive as long as you can in each run, as you choose your path through a series of random encounters. You’ll meet lots of different (and extremely formidable) enemies in some of the game’s most memorable locations, including epic boss battles.

Will Last of Us Part II remastered have a multiplayer mode?

Unfortunately not. The Last of Us Part II Remastered is purely a single player game. No multiplayer mode available. That’s a little disappointing, because the No Return mode looks like it would be perfect for a co-op survival battle. Ah well. Maybe next time.
