Flower and chocs are fine for Valentine’s Day, but why not treat your loved one to something more original? From smartwatches to multi-stylers, we’ve rounded up some great gift ideas below. Just add a card.

For music lovers… Samsung Galaxy Buds 2

If you’re buying for someone that loves listening to music or the latest podcasts – these Galaxy Buds2 are a great choice.

The True Wireless design means there are no cables getting in the way. All you need to do is connect the Buds2 to a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone (or other device), load-up your favourite playlist and get listening.

Thanks to the 2-way dynamic speaker system, everything sounds crisp, clear and full of punchy bass. Noise-cancelling technology is also on board, so you’ll be able to block out distractions and stay fully immersed. And when you want to hear what's going on around you, choose from 3 ambient sound modes.

All this cool and clever tech makes the Buds2 a great Valentine’s gift. Just as long as the person you buy them for doesn’t start wearing them when you’re around and you want to chat. That’s probably not a good sign.

Things to find out before you buy a mobile

Before you buy a phone as a gift for someone, you need to ask yourself (or them) a few key questions.

  • Pay monthly or SIM free? Pay monthly phones let you spread the cost of the phone over time, and tie you into a mobile network for the length of the contract. SIM free phones give you the freedom to choose any network and contract – but you need to pay for the phone upfront.

  • Team iPhone or Android? If they’ve got a phone they’re used to, they’ll probably want to stick to the same operating system.

  • Does size matter? Think about what they like using their phone for. Bigger screens are great for videos and games, but smaller phones might be best for someone that likes to use it with one hand and easily slip it into a bag or packet.

The gift of style… Dyson Airwrap Origin multi-styler and dryer

If someone’s been dropping hints about their hair being difficulty to style, this Dyson Airwrap multi-styler and dryer could be the perfect prezzie.

This Dyson can do it all - dry, curl, straighten and even hide flyaway strands. It uses something called the Coanda effect, with air pressure rather than heat gently drying and styling hair. Plus, intelligent heat control checks the temperature 40 times a second, so it’ll never damage hair. A bunch of attachments included, so whoever’s using it can curl, wave, smooth and dry their way to any style they choose.

For sporty types… the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6

We love the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 ‘s big, circular AMOLED display. It's curvy and crystal clear, with a traditional look and feel.

Fitness fans will love this smartwatch that can now track over 100 different workouts. And if you’re into running or jogging, the new Personalised Heart Rate Zone function creates five optimal running intensity levels based on how you’ve performed previously. It’ll know how well you're doing better than you do! You can also create a Custom Workout to build and track a routine around you and your goals. Plus, it lasts up to 40 hours of use on a full charge, or around 30 hours if you want the display on all the time.

Top tips for buying a smartwatch

Smartwatches make great gifts for anyone into their fitness. Here are our top buying tips to help you decide:

  • Design. Choose a smartwatch they’ll feel comfortable wearing for any occasion. Will they prefer a funky and moder design, or the classic look of normal watch-face and strap?

  • Compatibility. Make sure the smartwatch you buy for someone is compatible with their mobile. Apple Watches only work with iPhone, while Android Wear watches are compatible with most phones – even non-Androids.

  • Screen type. If they’ll want to view photos or use apps on their smartwatch, go for a colourful AMOLED display. If battery life is a bigger priority, smaller and simpler displays are best.
