LED face masks are taking the skincare world by storm. Scroll through TikTok or Instagram and you’ll see them everywhere. These high-tech devices harness the power of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to penetrate skin at different wavelengths, designed to target specific skin issues issues - from wrinkles to acne.

We all want glowing, radiant skin - but can an LED face mask help deliver? In this go-to guide, we'll find out what LED face masks can do for your skin, and how you should use and look after them best. Then we’ll round things out by showing you some great LED face masks. That way, you can decide if your skincare routine needs a little help. Let’s get glowing!

What do LED face masks do?

LED therapy works by emitting different colours of light - each colour is said to have its own unique benefits for the skin. Here's a breakdown of the most common LED light colours and what they target:

  • Red Light: This wavelength stimulates collagen production. It’s used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The idea is that red lights reduce inflammation and accelerate the healing process, alleviating sun damage and scarring.

  • Blue Light: If you have acne-prone skin, blue light therapy is the one for you. This wavelength targets acne-causing bacteria, so the aim is to reduce breakouts and prevent future blemishes. It's also designed to minimise the appearance of enlarged pores.

  • Green Light: Issues like hyperpigmentation or uneven skin tone are targeted with green light therapy. It’s designed to reduce the appearance of age spots and dark patches, for a more even complexion.

  • Yellow Light: The purpose of yellow light is to improve circulation, reduce redness and soothe sensitive or easily irritated skin.

  • Near-Infrared Light: This light penetrates the skin's lower layers, and is all about improving elasticity and firmness. That means tightening and lifting the skin, while reducing the appearance of sagging.

Before you start

While LED face masks are generally safe for all skin types, it's always a good idea to do a patch test before using a new device. If you have any pre-existing skin conditions or are taking medication that increase photosensitivity, talk to a dermatologist before starting LED therapy. Everybody’s skin is different.

How to use LED face masks

To get the most out of your LED face mask, it's important to use it consistently. Most manufacturers recommend using the device for 10-20 minutes per session, 3-5 times a week. Before applying the mask, make sure your skin is clean and free from makeup or skincare products.

When using the mask, relax and let the device work its magic. After your session, follow up with your usual skincare routine, making sure to apply a moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. With regular use, hopefully you’ll start to see improvements in your skin's texture, tone and overall health.

Remember:

While you might love using your new LED face mask (and we don’t blame you), it’s only one part of a well-rounded skincare routine - and that should include proper cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. Altogether, this is the best combination to achieve that healthy, glowing skin you’re dreaming of.

LED face masks cleaning and maintenance tips

To keep your LED face mask in top condition, it's crucial to clean it regularly. After each use, gently wipe the inside of the mask with a damp, soft cloth to remove any dirt or residue. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, as these can damage the delicate LED lights.

Store your mask in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and always follow the manufacturer's instructions for charging and handling your mask.

Why not try…

If you’re looking to join in on the LED face mask trend, how about this new Shark CryoGlow Blemish Repair Mask? It’s designed to target those pesky wrinkles, fine lines and blemishes. And the Cryoglow uses something very cool-sounding - InstaChill Cold Technology - to firm up and depuff your under eye area.

It has several modes that sound like you’re hitting a health spa, from 8-minute Blemish Repair to 4-minute Skin Sustain and 6-minute Better Ageing. So you can find the routine that works for you.

Its a comfortable fit thanks to the adjustable strap, and forehead and temple padding. And Shark say that it can be used on all skin types and tones. It’ll even keep track of your sessions so you check on your progress.
