Samsung has just introduced its new flagship S23 family, with three models available: the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and high-end Galaxy S23 Ultra.
As you might expect, these phones have plenty of new features to be excited about. So let’s go through each one, and help you decide which one you need in your hand…
Samsung Galaxy S23
Design
The entry-level Galaxy S23 packs a lot of power into its compact body, so it’s perfect for smaller hands and pockets. This phone looks and feels the part, with a super-tough Gorilla Glass and Armor Aluminium frame. And with an IP68 rating, it’s officially water resistant – tested to survive in a depth of 1.5 metres of fresh water for 30 minutes.
Display
The 6.1-inch FHD+ display has an adaptive refresh rate that goes up to 120Hz. That basically means that the motion is really, really smooth – so it’ll bring games and movies to live in your hands. It’s super bright too, so you won’t have to squint to read directions in bright daylight.
Cameras
There are three cameras on the back. A 50MP main shooter for popping portraits, a 12MP Ultra-wide camera for sweeping landscapes, and a 10MP telephoto zoom lens for that clock tower in the distance. Oh, and there’s a 12MP front facing camera for great looking selfies.
All four cameras have improved Nightography mode, so you can wave those grainy night-time photos bye-bye. Instead, enhanced AI does its magic to pack your photos and videos full of detail and colour, from sunset to sunrise.
Under the hood
Let’s talk about performance. The Galaxy S23 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and 8GB of RAM. Long story short - it’s fast. There isn’t an app or game that the Galaxy S23 can’t handle. And because it’s fuelled by a 3,900mAh battery, it can keep going all day long. Samsung claims it can last up to 22 hours of video playback on a single charge. You’ve also got a couple of storage options - 128GB or 256GB.
Samsung Galaxy S23+
Design and display
The Galaxy S23+ takes all the standout features from its little brother above - such as the same great camera set-up - and puts them in a bigger package. Its 6.6-inch screen gives you more room to play with, and we don’t just mean games. For example, you can comfortably run two apps and multitask like a pro, or kick back on the train and watch a TV show on a bigger screen.
Under the hood
The Galaxy S23+ has a bigger battery than the Galaxy S23 - 4,700mAh, to be exact. This bumps video playback up to 27 hours. Even if you never put your phone down, this one should see you through the whole day. The Galaxy S23+ comes with 256GB or 512GB of storage and 8GB RAM.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
Design
The Ultra does a lot to live up to its name. Starting with the looks. The rounded corners on the front and back create a seamless body that feels premium in the hand. And it’s easy on the eye, too. With its frosted glass back and elegant colours.
Display
Its Quad HD+ screen measures 6.8 inches, so you’ll have resolution and space for days. Websites, games, movies, you name it – it’ll look amazing on this one. And its adaptive refresh rate can go between 1 and 120Hz. Which means that it’s buttery smooth when you need it, but it’ll save battery when it can.
Cameras
When it comes to cameras, the Ultra doesn’t mess around. The headliner packs 200MP resolution for detail like never before. It makes colours and textures pop and it makes Nightography even better. The 12MP ultra-wide is here for those panoramic shots. And the 10MP telephoto lens can do 3x optical zoom, or punch in digitally for 100x zoom. With that, nothing will be out of reach.
S-Pen
The S-Pen is what sets the Ultra apart. A responsive stylus that lets you draw and write with precision when you need it. When you don’t, it stores out of sight, out of mind inside the phone. Oh, and you can also use it as a remote shutter for the camera. Say cheese!
Under the hood
The performance is suitably Ultra. The tip-top Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor is here, but you can spec it out with 12GB of RAM. That’s as good as it gets these days. Which also means that you’re covered for years to come. Hardware this fast need a lot of power. Luckily, there’s a 5000mAh battery, which Samsung claim is good for up to 26 hours of video playback.
You can have the S23 Ultra with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. There are also 512GB and 1TB storage versions, both with 12GB of RAM.
