If you’re planning on buying a phone for your kid, there’s a lot to think about. From finding a phone with the right features to choosing the best way to pay, it can be quite daunting. But it doesn’t have to be like that…
Let’s take things slowly and check out the benefits of SIM Only plans and SIM Free phones. Both are both solid options. They offer great flexibility and amazing value, and each has it’s own benefits. Here’s all you need to know.
What does SIM Only mean?
It does exactly what it says on the tin. SIM Only means you’re buying just the SIM card – not the phone. This could be ideal if you’re handing down a phone to your child. And also, if the phone’s not brand new, you might not be so worried about any scratches and scrapes they might inflict on it!
What are the benefits of going SIM Only for your kid’s first phone?
The main thing is the flexibility of choosing the amount of data your child really needs. Whether they need a little or a lot of data, there’s bound to be a perfect SIM Only deal for them. There’s loads of choice with a wide range of networks – and you’ll still get all the network benefits.
You could also save money compared to a monthly bill. Oh, and you’ve got the added benefit of not being locked into a lengthy contract.
What is a SIM Free phone?
SIM free is when you buy the phone without a SIM. Simply choose the phone you want, then pair it with the SIM Only deal of your choice. And when you buy from Currys, all SIM free phones come unlocked - so you can choose whichever network you like.
What are the benefits of buying a SIM Free phone?
When you go for a SIM free phone, you’re paying upfront and buying it outright, which might not be too much if you’ve got a budget phone in mind). It can definitely work out cheaper than a pay monthly plan. You’ve also got real flexibility - one-month rolling contracts and 12-month contracts are pretty common, compared to the two years you often need to sign up to with a pay monthly plan.
Are SIM Free phones unlocked?
All the SIM Free phones that Currys sells are unlocked, meaning you won’t be tied to a specific mobile network. This gives you the freedom to choose the network you think is best suited for your kid - whether that’s the cost, data options or coverage. Simply insert a SIM card from the likes of iD Mobile and you’re good to go. It’s a great option for parents who want to avoid being locked into long-term network commitments and want the ability to switch providers as needed.
SIM Free vs. Pay As You Go vs. Contract – which is best?
When it comes to picking the best phone plan, you’ve three main options: SIM Free, Pay As You Go (PAYG), and contract phones. Here's a breakdown of each:
SIM Free phones: With a SIM Free phone, you pay for the phone upfront and then choose a separate plan for calls, texts, and data. It’s super flexible, and you’re free to switch networks whenever you like. This is a great choice if you prefer to avoid long-term commitments and want to select a plan that suits your budget.
Pay As You Go (PAYG): PAYG means you only pay for what you use. It’s perfect for younger kids who don’t need unlimited calls and texts, but still need a way to keep in touch. You simply top up when necessary. No hidden bills, just complete control!
Contract phones: With a contract phone, you get a phone along with a fixed plan that usually includes calls, texts, and data. While it can be a more affordable way to get a phone upfront, it does mean committing to a monthly bill for a set period (usually 12-24 months). For older kids or teens, this could be fine if they need more data and don’t mind being tied to a contract.
So, which is best? It depends on what your child needs. For younger kids, SIM Free or PAYG options are typically more affordable and flexible. Older teens might appreciate a contract phone with all the latest features, but SIM Free phones still offer the most freedom.
