If you’re out and about with your electric scooter, the last thing you want is for the battery to go flat. What can you do? Make sure you do you research before you buy your e-scooter! This guide should help you find the right e-scooter for whatever journey you make. Plus, we’ve got plenty of tips to keep you going for longer.

But just a quick note from us first. For now, it’s illegal to ride a private e-scooter on roads, pavements or cycle lanes. There are places in the UK that are running trials, but those are just for rental electric scooters. So, if you’re planning on buying your own e-scooter, make sure you stick to private land… and that you’ve got the landowner’s permission.

What affects how far an e-scooter can travel?

Your e-scooter's range isn't just about the battery. There are a fair few other factors that determine how far you can travel:

Scooter make and model

Not all e-scooters are created equal. High-performance models usually have larger batteries and efficient motor helping to extend your travel distance. In contrast, budget-friendly options might offer shorter ranges. So, when you’re buying a new e-scooter, think about your typical journey length and choose a model that’s capable of going the distance.

Rider weight

Your overall weight – including anything you’re carrying - plays an important role in your scooter's performance. The range might be reduced for larger riders and heavy backpacks due to increased power demands. It's worth checking the manufacturer's weight recommendations to stay safe and know your limits.

Speed mode choices

Going at high speeds can drain your battery faster. A lot of e-scooters offer multiple speed modes, and if you choose a moderate setting can help conserve energy and extend your ride.

Terrain challenges

Smooth and level surfaces are a battery's best friend. On the other hand, rough or hilly terrains require more power which can - yes, you’ve already guessed - reduce your scooter's range. If you’re riding uphill frequently, you could lose up to 30% of your battery life.

Battery age and type

Over time, all batteries experience wear, leading to poorer performance. Lithium-ion batteries are common in e-scooters due to their efficiency, but they do degrade with age. If your scooter is getting out of juice a lot quicker than it used to, it could be time to look at replacing the battery.

Charging tips and best practices

Proper charging habits can extend the life of your battery, so here are some top tips. Avoid letting the battery deplete completely before recharging - instead, try to keep the battery level above 20%. Disconnect everything once it’s fully charged to prevent overcharging. Storing your scooter in a cool, dry place also helps keep your battery healthy.

What is the average e-scooter range?

As we’ve already discussed above, e-scooter ranges can vary depending on lots of different factors. But as a very rough guide:

  • Entry-level models can go 10-15 miles per charge, so they’re suitable for short commutes.

  • Mid-range scooters can typically travel 15-25 miles.

  • High-end models can reach up to 50 miles or more.

Top tips to maximise your e-scooter range

Want to squeeze every mile out of your e-scooter? Here are some practical tips:

Using regenerative braking

Some e-scooters feature regenerative braking systems that convert braking energy back into battery power. If you’re able to use this feature it can slightly extend your range.

Look out for better battery tech

There's always something happening in the world of battery tech. New types like solid-state batteries are constantly popping up, promising more power and longer life. Keep an eye on these advancements - they could make your next e-scooter ride even better.

Safety tips for e-scooter riders

Safety first! Here are some tips for protecting yourself on your e-scooter.

Wear protective gear. Always wear a helmet and consider additional protective gear like knee and elbow pads.

Follow the law. Learn and stick to the local and national laws regarding e-scooter use. They’re for your safety.

Check it regularly. Keep your scooter in top shape by checking tire pressure, brakes, and battery health regularly. In fact, we recommend you check your tyres at least once a week.

Be visible. Lights and reflective clothing are handy e-scooter accessories to make sure you're seen - especially if you’re riding at night.
