Loads of people – us included – wish they could check their WhatsApp messages straight from their wrist. And while the Apple Watch is a powerful little gadget, when it comes to WhatsApp, things aren’t quite as straightforward as downloading an app and getting stuck in.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through what’s possible, what’s not, and how to get the most out of WhatsApp on your Apple Watch. And whether you’re using the latest Apple Watch Series 8 or an older model, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive in…

Can you get WhatsApp on Apple Watch?

Here’s the short answer. There’s no official WhatsApp app for the Apple Watch. That means you can’t install WhatsApp directly like you would on your iPhone.

That said, you can still receive and reply to WhatsApp messages through notification mirroring. This feature lets your Apple Watch show alerts from your iPhone, including WhatsApp messages. You’ll be able to read and respond to them, you just won’t have full access to your chat history or any media files (like pics and videos).

If you want more control though, there are third-party apps like WatchChat 2 and Chatify that bring extra WhatsApp features to your wrist. We’ll cover those more later on.

How to enable WhatsApp notifications

To start getting WhatsApp messages on your Apple Watch, you’ll need to make sure notifications are set up properly. Here’s a quick step-by-step guide:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

  2. Scroll down and tap on Notifications.

  3. Find and press WhatsApp.

  4. Make sure Allow Notifications is switched on.

  5. Under ‘Alerts’, choose how you want them to appear (Lock Screen, Notification Centre, Banners).

  6. Now open the Watch app on your iPhone.

  7. Tap Notifications.

  8. Head down to WhatsApp and toggle it on under ‘Mirror iPhone Alerts’.

Once you’ve done this, your Apple Watch will mirror WhatsApp notifications from your iPhone. You’ll see any incoming messages pop up on your wrist, whether that’s texts from the group chat or work emails.

How to reply to WhatsApp on your watch

When a WhatsApp message comes through, you’ve got a few ways to respond straight from your Apple Watch…

  • Quick Replies – These are preset responses like ‘Ok’, ‘Thanks’ or ‘Talk later’. You can tap one to send it instantly. And they’re particularly good when you’re in a rush.

  • Dictation – Press the microphone icon and speak your reply. Your watch will then convert it into text.

  • Scribble – Use your finger to draw letters on the screen. It’s slower, but handy for short replies.

  • Emoji – Tap the smiley face, find an emoji to match your mood and send it over.

  • Voice message – While you can dictate text (like we’ve mentioned above), sending actual voice notes isn’t supported. So, if you prefer them instead of texting, you’re out of luck.

Keep in mind, you can only reply to messages you receive – you can’t start a new chat or view your full convo without using a third-party app. There’s more on that below.

Using third-party apps like WatchChat 2 or Chatify

If you want more than just notifications, third-party apps like WatchChat 2 and Chatify are worth checking out. These apps connect to WhatsApp Web and let you access way more features on your Apple Watch.

WatchChat 2:

  • Let’s you view full chat threads.

  • Supports replying with text, emoji and dictation.

  • Allows you to start new chats.

  • You’ll need to scan a QR code using WhatsApp Web on your iPhone.

Chatify:

  • Similar functionality to WatchChat 2.

  • Clean interface and easy to set up.

  • Also uses WhatsApp web for syncing.

Set up steps:

  • Download either app from the App Store on your iPhone.

  • Open the app on your Apple Watch.

  • A QR code will appear.

  • On your iPhone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Linked Devices > Link a Device.

  • Scan the QR code with your phone.

Once linked, you’ll have access to more of WhatsApp on your watch. Just be aware that these apps aren’t official. So, you might run into the odd bug, and there could be a few limits to what you can do.

What you can and can’t do on Apple Watch

Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s possible with WhatsApp on your Apple Watch…

You can:

  • Receive message notifications.

  • Reply using quick replies, dictation, scribble or emoji.

  • View recent messages (through third-party apps).

  • Start new chats (but only via third-party apps again).

You can’t:

  • Send or receive media (like photos, videos or voice notes).

  • Make or receive WhatsApp calls.

  • Access your full chat history.

  • Use WhatsApp without your iPhone nearby.

So, while it’s not the full WhatsApp experience with all the bells and whistles on, it’s still handy for speedy replies and staying in the loop when your phone’s out of reach.

Security and privacy considerations

Using third-party apps like WatchChat 2 and Chatify means you’re connecting your WhatsApp account through WhatsApp Web. This is generally safe, but it’s important to be cautious.

  • Only use trusted apps from the App Store.

  • Don’t share your QR code with anyone.

  • Log out of linked devices if you stop using the app.

Unlike Apple’s native iMessage – which uses end-to-end encryption to keep your messages private - third-party WhatsApp apps rely on external connections. That means there’s a slightly higher risk if the app isn’t well maintained or secure. If privacy is a big concern, sticking with notification mirroring might be the safest option.

FAQs

Can I use WhatsApp on Apple Watch without my iPhone nearby?

No – WhatsApp on Apple Watch relies on your iPhone for notifications and connectivity. Even third-party apps use WhatsApp web, which needs your iPhone to be online and nearby.

Does WhatsApp work on cellular Apple Watch models?

Even with a cellular Apple Watch, WhatsApp still needs your iPhone to be connected. Cellular models can receive mirrored notifications on their own, but full WhatsApp functions aren’t available without your iPhone.

Can I send photos or videos via WhatsApp on Apple Watch?

Unfortunately, no. The Apple Watch doesn’t support sending or viewing any media through WhatsApp. You’ll need to use your iPhone for that.

Is there a difference between WhatsApp and WhatsApp business on Apple Watch?

Functionally, there isn’t. Both versions of WhatsApp behave the same way on an Apple Watch – notifications can be mirrored, but there’s no official app for either. Third-party apps might support both, depending on how they connect through WhatsApp Web.

Will WhatsApp notifications show up if Do Not Disturb is enabled?

No – if Do Not Disturb or Focus mode is active on your iPhone or Apple Watch, WhatsApp notifications will be silenced. Make sure these modes are turned off if you’re expecting messages.

Can I customise WhatsApp notification sounds on Apple Watch?

Not directly. Apple Watch uses the default notification sound settings from your iPhone. WhatsApp doesn’t allow custom tones to be pushed through the watch itself.
