Laptops are portable PCs that let us get stuff done on the go. While tablets are even easier to take anywhere and offer a more interactive experience with their touchscreens. So, what if we told you there are bits of tech out there that combine the two? That's right, and they're called 2-in-1 laptops!

What makes a 2-in-1 laptop unique?

2-in-1 laptops are distinctive as they're essentially hybrid devices that function as both a laptop and a tablet. While some look like traditional laptops but with touchscreens, others are designed more like tablets which fold back so you can stand them up or use them flat.

Why get a 2-in-1 laptop?

One word — versatility. In laptop mode, you can write essays, prep presentations, and compose emails using the keyboard. Then switch it up to tablet mode to quickly navigate through Netflix, play games, scroll through your socials, and draw some cool art — especially if it comes with a stylus. It’s the best of both worlds.

Which type of 2-in-1 laptop should I buy?

A 2-in-1 that’s primarily a laptop, or vice-versa? Whichever you opt for depends on how you plan to use it…

For desk-based activities – laptop first

If you mostly work at a desk writing emails and working on reports and spreadsheets, a hinged 2-in-1 laptop design will suit you best. The Lenovo Yoga 9 looks and feels like a premium Windows 11 laptop, but push the screen backwards on its hinge, and it becomes a tablet that you can lie flat or stand up. It’ll help you power through your work too with its Intel Core Ultra 7 processor.

And when you’re watching movies in your downtime, you’ll see all the action in crisp detail on the 2.8K OLED touchscreen display. Pair that with Dolby Vision and all your shows will look cinematic!

Always on the go – tablet first

If you’re a busy bee dashing from meeting to meeting or class to class — picking up emails and everything else in between — a detachable tablet design will be the best fit for you.

The Microsoft Surface Pro is a slim tablet with the specs of a powerful PC squeezed inside. The 3K touchscreen display makes every document, image, and video pop off the screen. Then when you want to use it like a laptop, simply pair it with the Surface Pro Flex keyboard (sold separately). It's packed with the seriously smart Copilot AI personal assistant too, to help you get more done in less time.

How much power do you need?

Do you plan on using your 2-in-1 laptop for basic web browsing, social media, and word processing? Or do you need enough oomph for demanding creative and business software? The most important things to consider are:

  • Processor: Basic users, digital-savvy multitaskers, and serious creatives all require different levels of processing power. Look for a laptop with at least an Intel Core i5 or comparable processor to cover all the essentials.

  • SSD (solid state drive): The easiest way to make your laptop faster! SSD replaces noisy and slow hard drives to boot up your machine and launch apps in seconds.

  • RAM (Random Access Memory): This is the computer's short-term memory, and the more you have, the more programs and browser tabs you can run at once. Aim for at least 8GB of RAM if you're a multitasker.

  • Graphics: If you plan to use your 2-in-1 laptop for graphic design, photo editing, or gaming — you'll want to pay attention to the graphics capabilities. Look for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card, or at least one with Intel Iris graphics.

Comparing 2-in-1 laptops to traditional devices

How do 2-in-1 laptops stack up against standard laptops and tablets?

Regular laptops vs. 2-in-1 laptops

While regular laptops tend to offer better performance and larger screens, 2-in-1 laptops are more portable and flexible — making them a better option if you're on-the-go a lot and need a device that can easily switch between modes depending on your needs.

Tablets vs. 2-in-1 laptops

Traditional tablets are typically more lightweight and portable than 2-in-1 laptops, making them ideal for reading, watching videos, and browsing the web when you're out and about. However, if you need to use productivity software or do any type of work that requires a keyboard, then a 2-in-1 laptop is probably a better choice.
