Gaming can make you feel great. One easy way to send your dopamine levels soaring is by finding all the easter eggs in your favourite video games. These nifty little bonus features were once signatures for underappreciated developers but are now treasures that gamers actively hunt down. Knowing where to find them can be tricky though. That’s why we’ve teamed up with professional hidden easter egg finder, Hunter Clark (or @hiddengamingdetails on TikTok), to help you find all the juicy details in your go-to games.
The devil’s in the detail
The extreme attention to detail that developers add can take gameplay to the next level. But it also provides that oh-so-satisfying escapism that we want from our favourite games. For example, when playing Pokémon Scarlet, if you go into your bedroom, a Nintendo Switch sitting by the TV - and the colour of the Joy-Cons that you get in a Nintendo Switch bundle - will actually match up to the ones you’re playing with. If that’s not detail-oriented enough for you, eagle-eyed players will be able to spot the ‘M’ on Mario’s tire tread when racing around the many tracks in Mario Kart 8.
Meta matters
Some of the best easter eggs know exactly how meta they are. These gems are a little nudge-nudge, wink-wink to those in the know. One meta joke that references another pop culture hit can be found in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. On the map of Santa Seña, you’ll find an RV that has duct tape covering up bullet holes. This is a nice little nod to the iconic TV show Breaking Bad, as when Walt and Jesse’s RV is shot, they use duct tape to cover the holes. Only seriously dedicated fans of the show would be able to spot that. Finding what others perhaps can’t find gives you a sense of achievement and encourages you to tackle new challenges in your games.
NPCs are an easter egg goldmine
Non-Player Characters (NPCs) can really breathe life into the story, which can maximise the enjoyment you get when gaming. Interactions that contain hidden details are designed to be found by accident. For example, Ratatoskr, in God of War: Ragnarök can be summoned for help with a ring of a special chime. If you continuously hit the chime, it prompts him to say a funny quip each time, but one ring too many and he’ll have an incredibly angry outburst. This is something that you’d only be able to spot if you had hit the chimes multiple times on purpose after the discovery.
