Built-in ovens fit into your kitchen cabinet set up for a stylish look. You also get a modern oven with all the features without having to sacrifice a large chunk of kitchen floorspace. And, because it can be placed at eye level, you can keep a much closer eye on that roast chicken without having to bend down.
If you’re shopping for a new in-built oven, you’ll want to make sure that your dream oven is going to fit in its new home. There’s no point finding the model made for you if it isn’t made for your kitchen in mind! Fortunately, measuring up for a built-in oven is easy, since there are effectively only two major sizes - single and double. And these standard sizes are made to fit into standard size cavities. So far so good.
A single oven has a capacity of between 60 and 110 litres – this is great for normal family needs. A double oven ups it to 90 and 130 litres – great if you have a large family or you do regular dinner parties or Sunday roasts on an epic scale!

Standard single oven
A standard single oven only has one measurement you need to think about – and that’s height. This will measure between 45.9cm and 60cm.
The width and depth should be standard. The width will be 54 to 57cm and the depth is always 59.5cm. So, no need to think about them.
Double oven
Again, the main thing you’ll have to measure on a double oven is the height – that should be between 86cm and 89cm.
Like the single ovens, the width and depth on a double oven should be standard.
The width will be 59cm to 60cm, while the depth will be 54 and 58cm.
In either case, you can make things even easier on yourself. If you’re replacing an old oven, just measure its dimensions and keep that on hand for when you’re choosing a new oven. Simple!
Room for ventilation?
A standard oven cabinet is usually built with space to ventilate in mind. Because an oven is basically a big hot box (getting too technical?) it needs 5mm space along each side and 35mm at the back. You might also get 20mm at the top also left for ventilation – but if not, don’t worry. Built-in ovens are generally built to sit flush with a top cabinet.
Other tips
If you’re installing a new built-in oven, make sure your oven has access to gas and/or electricity. You’ll need a plumber when it comes time to do the install, but it’s worth bearing in mind when you think about where your oven should go.
You’re not limited by style, since built-in ovens still come as conventional, fan or multifunction ovens.
