Whereas compact ovens are a smart choice for smaller kitchens, or for those who make large meals regularly and could use an additional cooking appliance. Compact ovens have grill and microwave functions too, so they’re a flexible option, however (and whatever) you cook.

As for microwaves there are three types available: solo, grill and combi. It’s possible to find freestanding or built-in versions of each. Solo microwaves are also referred to as ‘standard’ microwaves or ‘microwave-only’ models. They’re ideal for simple tasks like reheating food, cooking ready meals, steaming vegetables and defrosting meat.

Grill microwaves offer the same features as solo microwaves, with the addition of an internal grill. Combination or ‘combi’ microwaves use convection heating (fanned hot air), as well as grill and microwave functionality. You can use each feature separately, or grill and microwave together.

Freestanding microwaves – sometimes referred to as ‘countertop’ microwaves – sit on your kitchen counter. These are the most common type of microwave and there are a wide range of affordable options. Simply plug them in to start cooking and move them whenever required. Whereas built-in microwaves are fitted into a cabinet or wall – usually above the hob or oven. They need to be installed by an accredited professional and will cost more than most freestanding options.

That said, they keep your kitchen counters clear, blend seamlessly into your kitchen and can be reached more easily when using your hob or oven, if they’re installed above them.

Though many people simply ask themselves, ‘gas or electric hob?’ when shopping for a new appliance, there’s actually more to consider. Three popular hob types you’re likely to come across are induction, ceramic and gas.

An induction hob heats pans directly, rather than heating the cooking surface, like electric and gas hobs. A ceramic electric hob has a smooth, ceramic-glass surface, with heating elements underneath. Patterns on top show where the heating zones are, and their size. As the name suggests, gas hobs burn natural gas, and they have burners with visible flames.

You may have come across the terms ‘extraction’ and ‘recirculation’ where cooker hoods are concerned; here’s how each of them works.

Extraction hoods:

An extraction (or ducted) cooker hood will remove stale air from your kitchen and release it outside through a vent.

Recirculation hoods:

Sometimes referred to as ductless hoods, recirculation hoods take in air and filter it, before pumping it back into the room. No vents? No problem. Recirculating hoods are a good option for anyone living in a rented property with strict leasehold regulations, which may prevent external vents from being fitted, or in kitchens without windows or an external wall.
