What is Dead Island 2?

Get set for some serious zombie slaying...

Dead Island 2 is a not-for-the-faint-hearted zombie slaying game. This first-person action RPG drops you into a nightmarish version of LA (or HELL-A, as it’s now called). By killing the undead – lots of them – you’ll become the ultimate zombie slayer. Or die trying.

Even though it’s been years since the first Dead Island game (was it really way back in 2011?), the sequel takes place a mere few months after the events of the first game. with the zombie outbreak having spread across the United States.

There are literally dozens of distinct zombie types, each with their own behaviours and method attack. They’re challenging, relentless, and annoyingly bad-tempered. Read on if want to have any chance of survival…

Dead Island 2 gameplay

Reasdy to slay? Choose from one of six characters (more on them below), select single or co-op play, and set off on a quest to kill zombies and complete fun side missions. Slay and play, in other words.

So far, so easy. Except that’s not quite true, because just like the original Dead Island, there’s actually no ‘easy’ mode in Dead Island 2. In fact, there’s no difficulty setting – just like there wouldn’t be if a zombie outbreak happened in real life, right?

All players experience the game at the same level of toughness, but there is a sliding difficulty scale. The more you level up, the stronger the zombies become.

According to the official website, Dead Island 2 lets you experience the most advanced dismemberment system ever. It makes killing zombies feel more satisfying and look more horrifying. Like we said earlier…this isn’t a game for the faint of heart. In fact, it’s so graphic that we struggled to find any images wholesome enough for this blog. Luckily, this innocent inflatable pink flamingo can be found floating in a swimming pool. Phew!

Dead Island 2 playing modes

You can play Dead Island 2 in single player RPG story mode, or as part of a three-person team in co-op mode.

To unlock co-op mode, dive into story mode and get playing. As soon as you get past the tutorial and head into Bel Air, you’ll earn the ability to play with your mates. A message will flash up to tell you co-op mode is available, so keep an eye out for it – while keeping another eye out for zombies.

Dead Island 2 characters

In Dead Island 2, you’ve got six playable characters to choose from. Each one has their own unique personality, playing style and skills.

It pays to choose wisely, especially as you can’t change characters in Dead Island 2. Our tip is to try them all out before you stick with one - you can do this by starting new games before you get deeply involved in a campaign.

So, let’s take a closer look at the super slaying six…

Amy
The Dead Island 2 website describes Amy as a quick-witted Paralympian who has found something even better than her runner’s high: zombie-slaying! She’s laid-back, focused, and calm. In fact, very little can make her lose her cool. Sounds like a useful person to have around in a zombocalypse.

Bruno
Bruno is a scheming hustler who was always pulling off heists and scams in the pre-zombie days. But now, his plans and calculations are all about taking down the undead. Perhaps he tried scamming them first, but was unsuccessful.

Carla
Carla is a motorcycle stunt rider who can effortlessly jump through rings of fire, leap across ravines and carry out mid-air flips. The zompocalypse has barely made her break a sweat, and she definitely seems to be up for the whole slayer thing.

Dani
Dani is a a tough and headstrong brawler with a foul mouth and twisted sense of humour. She mows through zombies the way she mowed through opposing roller derby teams in her pre-zompocalypse sporting life.

Jacob
Jacob is an antihero with rockstar flair. His charm is paired with a reckless disregard for self-preservation. Apparently, he revels in being a slayer in HELL-A.

Ryan
Ryan has a stubborn streak a mile wide, and a big heart. He’s on a mission to get back to his little brother in Fresno, and nothing – alive or dead – is gonna stop him!

So, who to choose? Well, it all depends on how you want to play the game. We’d say the best all-rounders are probably Carla or Jacob. They’ve both got handy skills and decent stats. Ryan is the best defensive player, and Amy is the quickest of the bunch. Oh, and if you’re into explosions – pick Dani.
