When Silent Hill 2 launched all the way back in 2001, it quickly became one of the most popular survival horror games ever made. And now it’s getting the full-blown remaster treatment – with shiny new graphics that bring it right into the modern era.
That iconic story remains the same though. After James receives a letter from his dead wife, he heads to the mist shrouded town of Silent Hill to investigate. But it’s really not the kind of place that would get a good score on Trip Advisor.
To get you prepared for your trip to Silent Hill (and trust us, you’re going to need all the help you can get), we’ve gathered together everything you need to know. From the release date and pre-order details to the spine-chilling gameplay and more.

Silent Hill 2 remake platforms

How to play Silent Hill 2 remake
It isn’t just the game’s visuals, audio and soundtrack that have had a complete overhaul. The gameplay has also been tuned up to ghoulish new heights. The fixed camera from the original is gone for good and has been replaced with an over the shoulder view that puts you right in the middle of the action. Seeing those monsters up close is now way scarier than we remember.
And while your old favourite weapons make a return – like the handgun and trusty steel pipe – you’ll be wielding them using a fully updated combat system. You’ll fend off your demonic enemies by avoiding their attacks with a well-timed dodge or picking them off from a distance by aiming down sights. If things get too hellish though, sometimes it’s better to run and hide. Because James isn’t a trained soldier, it won’t take much to finish him off.
The constant thick mist is back too, which offers the nightmarish nasties plenty of cover to strike from. While your radio picks up eerie whispers and static that might give you some handy clues about what’s lurking out there, and cues on when it’s safe to move. So, listen carefully…
You have to use your head at points as well. Puzzles will stop you in your tracks and force you to think through your problems instead of blasting your way past them. And you won’t just be able to use the same solutions from the original either. The devs have come up with some fiendish new takes on the brain benders that puzzled us back in 2001. Meaning veterans of the series and Silent Hill newbies are both going to be scratching their heads.
How many hours of gameplay will Silent Hill 2 remake have?
The original Silent Hill 2 took about 9 hours to complete and find all those extra hidden secrets. And you can probably expect to spend a similar amount of time finishing the story of the remake.
But we do know that the devs have decided to expand the scope of the original a bit too. Remember all those buildings and locations you couldn’t access before? Well now you can. Meaning you’ll be spending more time exploring and searching for supplies. Stay alert though. Who knows what new horrors might be waiting for you.
Who are the main characters in Silent Hill 2 remake?
With a spooky name like Silent Hill, you can expect to come across some equally unsettling people there. And a lot of them aren’t who they seem. You’ve been warned.
James Sunderland – The main character of the game. James is grieving the death of his wife. And in the fog-filled town, he’ll have to face plenty of personal demons. As well as a ton of very real ones.
Mary Shepherd-Sunderland – James’ late wife, whose letter kick-starts his visit to Silent Hill. Her memory and presence haunts James throughout the whole nightmare.
Maria – A woman who looks strikingly similar to Mary but has an entirely different personality. She plays a key role in James’ journey, as well as his psychological torment.
Laura – A young girl James meets in the town. She’s completely unfazed by the horror happening around her though. And seems to have a mysterious connection to Mary.
What are the different Silent Hill 2 remake game mode options?
There’s just the one main story mode to play. But that’s really all you’re going to need. After all, once you’ve experienced just how terrifying this game is, you’ll probably have to take a break. It’s not for the faint hearted, that’s for sure.
Will Silent Hill 2 remake have a multiplayer mode?
This is a single-player title through and through, so you can’t rely on a mate here to watch your back. You’re going to have to brave the streets of Silent Hill alone…
What Silent Hill 2 remake features are player customisable?
Because Silent Hill 2 is based on an old-school title, there’s not much in the way of customisation. The king here is gameplay and using whatever you can get your hands on to survive. You won’t have time to worry about what shirt your character is wearing!
