Sonic Superstars takes the iconic franchise right back to its roots. It’ll have you side-scrolling at break-neck speed, just like those golden age games from the ‘90s! But with reimagined graphics, this old-meets-new title lets you play as all your favourite characters in 3D stages that look absolutely gorgeous.

Sonic Superstars is all about “new thrills” and “classic feels” — according to the Sonic Team. You’ll explore mystical islands and harness all-new Emerald powers to move and attack in different ways. And you’ll need them too, as Doctor Eggman and his sidekick Fang are up to no good once again. They’ll try to turn the islands’ native animals against you and your friends as you manoeuvre your way through dozens of dangerous zones.

We can’t wait to get our hands on the upcoming game — that’s if we can catch Sonic first! It should be a real nostalgia trip for loyal Sonic fans, but it’ll have new players hooked too. From the release date and price to the lightning-fast gameplay, here’s everything you need to know.

What is Sonic Superstars’ release date?

Sonic Superstars sprints its way onto all major consoles on October 17th, 2023. Not long to go until you can blast through those levels with sonic speed! You better buy some decent running shoes.

How much will Sonic Superstars cost?

Sonic Superstars (Standard Edition) will set you back £54.99. That’s for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, Xbox One and Windows platforms. As Sonic says — “the more, the merrier!”

If you want Sonic Superstars (Deluxe Edition), it’ll cost you £59.99. But for that extra fiver, you’ll get a LEGO® Fun Pack, Sonic Rabbit Skin, Mecha Sonic Skin (for Battle Mode), bonus main menu wallpapers, a digital artbook and a mini original soundtrack. Nice.

Can I pre-order Sonic Superstars?

You can pre-order your copy of Sonic Superstars for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch right now. Oh, and if you enter code SONIC10 at checkout — you’ll save 10%. Physical and digital pre-orders of Sonic Superstars are available via the PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo online stores. PC players can pre-purchase on Steam.

Sonic Superstars platforms and crossplay

As we’ve mentioned, Sonic Superstars will be playable on all 9th gen consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch) as well as PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. So, even if you’re not quite ready to pull the trigger on one of the latest platforms — you’ll still be able to scramble Eggman’s plans!

Cross-platform play is rumoured for Sonic Superstars. There’ll be more on the multiplayer stuff later, but if true, it’ll mean that you can play on your PS5 and partner up with your friend on Xbox Series X/S.

How to play Sonic Superstars

You gotta go fast in Sonic Superstars! It’ll have you side-scrolling at hyper speed, collecting rings, and chasing Chaos Emeralds as you cross the Northstar Islands. And speaking of Chaos Emeralds, these rare and wonderful stones will help you along the way — letting you multiply, swim up waterfalls, change form, and do even more.

Like all classic Sonic games, you’ll run, roll, jump and loop through some seriously difficult zones and special stages. Doctor Eggman never makes things easy for you! And putting a stop to his devious plans is the aim of the game. He’ll be transforming the islands’ giant inhabitants into a massive army of bio-mechanical ‘Badniks’ — many of which you’ll have to battle against along the way.

And Eggman won’t be alone either. He’ll be teaming up with Fang the Hunter and their lackey — Trip the Sungazer — to stop you in your tracks. So, you better watch out!

How many hours of gameplay will Sonic Superstars have?

No news on this we’re afraid. But going by previous Sonic instalments, you should get plenty of hours out of it. There’ll be several islands to trek across, with 12 zones on each. Plus, every zone is split into different acts with a boss level at the end as well. Don’t forget about those special stages too!

What are Sonic Superstars’ main factions/characters?

Aside from the main man, you’ll also be able to play franchise favourites like Tails, Knuckles and Amy Rose. You can take advantage of their unique abilities as you blaze a path across the Northstar Islands. Sonic can roll into a dash after a jump, Tails can fly, Knuckles can glide and climb, and Amy Rose can attack enemies with a hammer and double jump.

The colourful cast doesn’t end there. You’ll have to go up against arch-nemesis Doctor Eggman and Fang the Hunter, as well as a heavily armoured new baddie called Trip. If you put an end to their evil plans quickly, the Doctor and his accomplices will end up with egg on their faces!

What Sonic Superstars features are player-customisable?

Between levels, you’ll be able to explore a 2D hub world that’ll not only let you select a zone, but customise your character too. Here, you’ll be able to purchase parts that you can equip them with. Medals are the in-game currency, and these are earned through challenging special stages that’ll have you navigating your way through rotating mazes. We hope you don’t get motion sick!

What are the different Sonic Superstars game mode options?

In the main campaign, you’ll have to guide and team up Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy Rose to thwart Eggman’s dastardly plans. Bringing peace back to the Northstar Islands will be your top priority. And keep your wits about you, as Fang and Trip will be lurking around too! But multiplayer mode is where Sonic Superstars will really shine…

Will Sonic Superstars have a multiplayer mode?

Sonic Superstars breaks new ground. It’ll be the first game in the Sonic series to let you play through the entire campaign with three other players locally. So, you can all have a blast dashing through the stages with family and friends!

Challenging other Sonic fans from around the world is possible too. Compete locally or online with up to 8 players in an all-new Battle Mode. We’re also hearing that you can race, have collecting competitions, and play a “last man standing” style game.
