Nintendo are digging deep into their back catalogue once again. And this time, they’ve decided to give Super Mario RPG the full-blown remake treatment. With updated 3D cinematics, graphics, and gameplay the fan-favourite action role playing game is looking better than ever. If you can believe it, it’s been nearly 30 years since the original came out. Old-school gamers are in for a treat.
On their quest, Mario and the gang have to fix the Star Road – a winding magical street that can grant wishes. The road’s been destroyed and split into seven pieces, which they’ll have to collect if they want to repair it. Oh, and Smithy’s Gang (a powerful new army) have invaded the Mushroom Kingdom too. When it rains, it pours…
To get you set for the retro release, we’ve put together a mini guide full of everything you need to know. From the release date and price to the turn-based gameplay, pre-order details and more.
What is Super Mario RPG’s release date?
Super Mario RPG hops onto Nintendo Switch on November 17 2023. The original released all the way back in 1996 on the SNES, so it’s definitely about time for a remake. Even if it does make us feel pretty old…
How much will Super Mario RPG cost?
You’ll be able to bag your copy of the game for a super price. The standard edition will cost you £49.99. And from what we can see, it doesn’t look like there’s a more expensive special or collector’s edition incoming either.
Can I pre-order Super Mario RPG?
Yep – you can pre-order it right now. And if you do, we’ll get it to you right on release day. But if you prefer to buy your games digitally, that’s cool too. Just grab yourself an eShop gift card and download the game straight from the Nintendo Store. Then you won’t have to wait around for the postman either!
Super Mario RPG platforms and crossplay
Mario has been the face of Nintendo for decades now. And that won’t be changing for Super Mario RPG. The game’s exclusive to the Nintendo Switch, so, if you want to dive into Mario and Co.’s latest adventure, you’re going to have to pick up the handheld console.
How to play Super Mario RPG
In Super Mario RPG you’ll lead your party up against the hordes of Smithy’s Gang in tactical turn-based combat. You’ll fight them on a bunch of different battlegrounds. From chilly mountain passes and scorching deserts, to lush green grasslands. And it looks like there’s going to be some properly whacky maps thrown in too, like an airship and a beach. There won’t be any time for sunbathing though!
In every face off with Smithy’s henchmen, you’ll need to take full advantage of each character’s unique abilities to beat them. Which becomes even more important in epic boss battles, where you’ll have to use all your combined skills and smarts to take them down.
Timing is everything here as well. With a tap of a button at just the right moment, you can block attacks or give yourself an extra boost of damage. Which can swing the balance and be the difference between victory and defeat. Get those Joy-Cons at the ready…
How many hours of gameplay will Super Mario RPG have?
Because we haven’t got an exact number right now, we’ve had to go off the original game from the 90s. After all, it’s probably safe to say they’re going to be similar in length. The classic version took about 17.5 hours to get through the main story campaign. And about 25.5 hours if you want to get that 100% completion stat. That’s plenty of quality time to hang out with Mario and the rest of the crew.
Who are the main characters?
You’ll have five playable characters to pick from:
Mario.
Bowser.
Mallow.
Geno.
Princess Peach.
Alongside Mario, you need to select two of the others to join your party. And with this trio, you’ll head into combat. But make sure you choose wisely. Because each character comes with their own set of strengths and weaknesses. There’s one big talking point here though. Mario and Bowser finally working together?! What’s all that about then?
What are the different Super Mario RPG game mode options?
There’s just the one here – a story driven single player campaign. But that’s all you’re going to need.
Will Super Mario RPG have a multiplayer mode?
This is a single-player adventure through and through, so there won’t be any multiplayer mode here. Even if it would be pretty cool to team up with your mates to take down Smithy’s army!
What Super Mario RPG features are player customisable?
The main thing you’ll be customising is who joins your gang for each battle. Try out different combos of characters to see who works well together – and create the ultimate fighting squad. The Mushroom Kingdom needs you at the top of your game after all!
