Did you know that Brits are the biggest video gamers in the world? Yep. On average we spend 4 hours 36 minutes a week playing games. That’s twice as much as the global average. And with longer games than ever before (we’re looking at you Starfield) and more than 1 billion people playing online games, it might be time to make sure you’re gaming in comfort.

If you’ve ever worked in an office, you’ll know how important it is to sit at the right height, with the right posture and the right support. And that goes double for gaming. Yes, it may be a lot of fun. But those gaming sessions can take it out of you. So, it’s important you get your gaming set up right.

First thing on your list should be a great gaming chair.

What is a gaming chair?

Let’s get the easy bit out of the way first. A gaming chair is a chair built for gamers!

But there’s a bit more to it than that. Gaming chairs have a unique style – generally a large, high back rest – that you won’t usually find with an office chair. This is to support the upper back and shoulders during long gaming sessions. But gaming chairs are also about the look. The colours and overall look of a gaming chair can often resemble something out of the front seat of a rally car.

One of the best things about gaming chairs is that almost all parts of it are adjustable. From the arm rests, the back and the lumbar support, practically everything on a gaming chair and be adjusted and customised to fit you. The one exception can be the headrest, which is often fixed in place with adjustable cushions.

Are gaming chairs good for office work?

Because gaming chairs are designed for gaming marathons in mind (i.e. lots and lots of sitting in one spot) they’re often a decent substitute for an office chair. Especially if you’re working from home. Gaming chairs also have the advantage of offering great value for money, where an adjustable office chair can be much more expensive.

Some gaming chairs might have bucket seats. This is a design choice (rather than something built for comfort) so some people might prefer the flat seats (with a larger surface area) that a typical office chair provides. One thing that a gaming chair does really well is the angle of recline it offers. Trying to sit up straight comfortably for hours at a time can cause fatigue, so being able to sit back and take a rest is actually very beneficial. As well as comfortable.

Gaming chair ergonomics

Ergonomic gaming chairs are all about staying comfortable during long gaming sessions. Lumbar support keeps the lower back arch comfortable and without strain. Adjustable arm rests can be moved in all directions to fit your body dimensions, and to switch from one position to another – useful for when you switch from a mouse and keyboard to a controller. The choice to swivel and recline your seat is also important – because staying in one position the whole time can get uncomfortable. It’s also a good idea to move around and have a stretch when you’re sitting for long periods pf time.
