Apple’s new AirTag 2 for 2026: key features and should you upgrade?

Apple has launched a new AirTag for 2026. It looks very similar to the original - same small white disc, same stainless-steel back, same compact size. But while the outside hasn’t changed much, the tech inside has. The updated AirTag 2 comes with a longer tracking range, more helpful direction-finding, and some clever tweaks that make it easier to use.

The biggest change is something called a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. With the original AirTag, your phone could guide you to a lost item using on-screen arrows and distance indicators. It worked great, but you needed to be fairly close before the guidance kicked in - roughly the length of a large room or a bit further.

With AirTag 2, that “guiding you in” feature works from much further away. So instead of wandering around an airport baggage hall waiting to get close enough for your phone to lock on, it can start pointing you in the right direction much sooner. Same if you’re in a big shopping centre, a stadium, or a busy train station. Your phone can begin guiding you earlier.

No more lost luggage

There’s also a useful addition for travellers. You can now temporarily share your AirTag’s location with certain airlines if your luggage goes missing. So instead of just telling the desk staff that it’s lost, you can show them exactly where it’s pinging.

50% louder speaker

Apple has also made the built-in speaker much louder. That might not sound much, but if you’ve ever tried to hear your AirTag pinging from inside a gym bag or under a sofa cushion, you’ll know that louder is better.

Find it in the crowd

Tracking updates in busy areas have been improved too. When you’re in a crowded place with loads of devices around, the new AirTag is better at keeping its connection with your phone. So even when there’s lots of signal noise, it stays linked and tracking your stuff.

The big difference with AirTag 2 is how much easier it makes finding your stuff. Your phone can start guiding you to a lost item from further away thanks to the new Ultra Wideband chip. And if someone tries to track you by sneaking their AirTag into your stuff, your phone will let you know. For example, if an AirTag you don’t own starts moving around with you, you’ll get a loud warning notification.

Compatibility and requirements

To get the full benefit of the longer-range direction finding, you’ll need an iPhone model with Ultra Wideband support. That means you’re looking at iPhone 11 or newer. If you’ve got one of those older models, you can still use AirTag 2 with the Find My app, but you won’t get the new extended on-screen arrow guidance from further away.

Should you upgrade from the original AirTag?

If your current AirTag just helps you find things around the house, there’s no urgent need to upgrade. But if you travel often, regularly check luggage or think you’d benefit from Precision Finding in public spaces, the longer range makes a big difference.

If you’re buying your first tracker, it definitely makes sense to go for the newest version. If you already own a few AirTags, we suggest you upgrade the ones you use for travel first, and keep the originals for everyday tracking at home.

Is AirTag 2 more accurate than the original?

It’s not more accurate, but it will help you locate stuff quicker. The AirTag 2 won’t pinpoint your stuff closer to the exact centimetre than the older model, but what’s changed is the range. Your iPhone can pick up the signal from further away and start guiding you to your item sooner. So, in a big place like an airport, you’ll get those on-screen arrows from a greater distance. And that helps makes finding your things faster.

Should I upgrade from AirTag to AirTag 2?

It depends how you use it. If it mostly lives on your house keys, you might not feel a huge difference. But if you travel a lot, track luggage or use the directional finding feature in larger places, you’ll likely appreciate the longer range.

How far can AirTag 2 track items?

Apple hasn’t published an official range for the AirTag 2’s Precision Finding feature, but owners have reported that it works from 20–30 metres indoors, and sometimes further in open spaces. That’s quite a bit further than the original model.

For longer distances, the AirTag2 relies on Apple’s Find My network - which means nearby Apple devices help anonymously update your item’s location. So technically, it can work across cities or even countries - just as long as it passes near other Apple devices

Can AirTag 2 be used to track pets or luggage?

Yes, lots of people use them for both. It’s great for luggage because you can see where your bag is during travel, and there’s even a feature that lets you share a tracking link with certain airlines. For pets, it can be helpful in towns and cities where there are lots of Apple devices around. It’s not a dedicated GPS pet tracker with live satellite tracking - it works through the Find My network.

How long does the AirTag 2 battery last?

Battery life is still about a year. It uses a small CR2032 coin battery that you can replace yourself in seconds. There’s no charging involved - just swap it when you get a low-battery notification.
