Who is the e-scooter for?

Let’s start with the basics – who is the electric scooter for? An adult electric scooter is usually more powerful, can carry more weight and comes lots of features like mobile connectivity. A kids electric scooter is generally slower, and has great safety features to help young riders build confidence.

Electric scooters are a lot of fun! A great scooter is a smooth ride, is really simple to pick up and use and, because they’re electric, they’re environmentally friendly too.

Electric scooter rules and regulations

Right now, the UK law states that privately owned e-scooters must only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission. So, no riding e-scooters on public roads or pavements. And while there’s no such thing as an e-scooter license, you need a UK driving license if you’re renting an electric scooter.

New to scooting and nervous about the speed and acceleration? Don’t worry! Lots of electric scooters come with different speed modes, so you can stick to a low power until you feel comfortable.

Electric vehicle accessories

Before you set off, make sure you’ve got all the electric scooter accessories you need. Safety helmets are a must – especially if they have LED lights on them. Protection pads for elbows, knees and wrists are recommended too - especially for kids.

Speed modes

One great feature to look out for is speed modes. This is where you can switch between modes that generally have an increasing acceleration and top speed. The lowest mode (sometimes called eco mode) is great for beginners finding their feet and saves battery too. When you’re ready, switch to the top mode for full power. If you prefer to take life at a slower pace, some scooters even have a dedicated walking mode. Simply hop off the scooter and walk alongside it while the scooter does the legwork!

Locking up your scooter

While it’s always good to keep your electric scooter locked away when you’re not using it, there are some e-scooters that come with built-in locks too. You’ll find everything from cable locks to NFC locking and unlocking cards. If your chosen scooter doesn’t feature an integrated lock of any kind, it’s worth investing in a standard chain lock, U- lock, or D-lock for extra security.

Connecting your phone

If the scooter you buy has its own app, that means you’ll be able to control lots of features of your scooter from your phone. From checking battery life, getting info about your last scooting session or unlocking your scooter It's worth booting up any associated app right from the start too, as you won’t be able to access all the features of certain models without it. Just don’t stare at all that data while you’re riding!

Shop scooters with compatible app

Remember that it’s currently only legal to ride your e-scooter on private land, so try to find a scooter than works with the terrain you have access to.
