So, you’re sat there wondering “what version of Windows do I have?” But you’re not really sure where to start looking. Don’t worry about it. You don’t have to be a computer hacker to find out. Luckily, it’s pretty straightforward stuff. So, here’s how to check which one you’re rocking on your Windows laptop or PC…
Finding your Windows version
Have you got the latest version of Windows, or are you stuck with Windows XP? We’ve rounded up a few different ways to help you check.
Finding your Windows version in Run
Let’s take a quick shortcut. Press the Windows key and R, and a little box called ‘Run’ will pop up. Type in ‘winver’ and hit Enter. Another window will then appear. And this should have all the relevant info you need about your version of Windows. Voila.
Finding your Windows version in Settings
Here’s another speedy way to check which Windows version you’ve got.
Click on the ‘Start’ menu and then press on the settings icon – it’s the one that looks like a gear. Then hit ‘System’ and choose ‘About’. And that’s it. Your version of Windows will be right there on the screen.
Check Main System Information
Right click on the ‘Start’ button down in the bottom lefthand corner. If you can’t find it, it’s that bit with the Microsoft Windows logo (the four white squares).
Select ‘System’ and then scroll down a little bit. Look underneath the ‘Windows Specifications’ section, and you’ll see ‘Edition’. Your version of Windows should be sat next to that. It’s nice and easy to spot.
Using Command Prompt
This one is a bit more techy:
Press and hold the Windows key and X at the same time.
Choose ‘Command Prompt’.
Type ‘systeminfo’.
Hit Enter.
Scroll down and your Windows version should be right there.
And you’re all done!
Why do I need to know my Windows version?
It can be important when it comes to your checking your computer or laptop for updates and seeing what’s compatible with it. Some bits of software or games you buy might not work – especially if you’re running a super old version – so it’s worth checking before you drop the cash. You might have to upgrade to the latest Windows version.
Oh, and all our steps above should work like a charm for most of the modern versions of Windows. To get specific, that’s Windows, 7, 8, 10 or 11. If you’re still on Windows 98, you’re on your own there. Sorry!
