Monster Hunter Wilds has a lot to live up to. Capcom’s previous instalment in the series – Monster Hunter World – smashed records, quickly becoming their best-selling game of all time. No pressure then, guys.

What’s your quest this time round then? Well, it’s shrouded in mystery. A boy has been found on the border of the Forbidden Lands; an uncharted region unexplored by the Guild. After explaining how his village was destroyed by a deadly monster, you’ve been tasked to track down and eliminate it. With a nickname like the ‘White Wraith’ it doesn’t sound like it’s going to be too friendly…

To get you ready for the big hunt, we’ve put together a mini guide containing everything you need to know. From the monster slaying gameplay to the release date, pre-order info and more.

What is the Monster Hunter Wilds’ release date?

Monster Hunter Wilds roars onto PC and consoles on February 28, 2025. So, grab your weapons and gear up. The beasts are coming.

How much will Monster Hunter Wilds cost?

That all depends on what platform you go for. You can bag the game here at Currys for £64.99 on PlayStation and Xbox. And if you do get it from us, you’ll get an exclusive steelbook case for that extra coin. Pop that on your shelf, and you can show it off to all your mates when they come over for some couch co-op.

Playing on PC? Buy it through Steam, and you’ll be paying a bit less at £59.99. But like we said, you’ll be missing out on that cool case…

Can I pre-order Monster Hunter Wilds?

You can pre-order your copy of the game below on Xbox or PlayStation. And you won’t just be getting the game through the door on launch day. We’ve also got a nice little 20% discount code for you. Just enter MONSTER20 at checkout and we’ll slice a bit off the price. Don’t say we never treat you.

Monster Hunter Wilds platforms and crossplay

You’ll be able to play on PC, Xbox Series X/Series S and PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, if you’re a Nintendo Switch player, it looks like you’ll be missing out here. The same goes for if you’re still rocking a last gen console. It might be a good excuse for an upgrade!

For the first time in the series though, we’ve got multiplayer crossplay to look forward to. Join forces with your pals and you’ll be able to tackle colossal monsters together – no matter what platform you’re all playing on. Nice.

How to play Monster Hunter Wilds

You might have guessed this from the name - you’ll be playing as a professional monster hunter. Travelling across the open world, you’ll have to plan, track down and then annihilate all manner of beasts. Whether that’s up close and personal, or with clever traps. The more you defeat, the better gear you’ll be able to craft and use. Helping you to tackle the biggest and baddest baddies in the game.

Slogging around on foot isn’t much fun though. Which is where your new mounts, the Seikrets, come in. They’ll ferry you from place to place and can even track the location of your targets using their powerful sense of smell. They’ll carry weapons for you too, letting you store and switch out your swords without trekking back to camp.

Missions aren’t going to be straightforward. And not just because the monsters are as big as a building. Weather can throw a spanner in the works by changing dramatically while you’re in the field. You might be stalking your prey, and then a sandstorm rolls in, blinding you completely. It’s going to change the behaviour of each monster as well, so you’ll need to be ready to adapt on the fly.

How many hours of gameplay will Monster Hunter Wilds have?

We don’t have an exact number to go off just yet. But the previous game in the series (Monster Hunter: World) was absolutely stuffed with things to see and do. And it took about 115 hours if you wanted to finish the main story and complete all those side quests.

With the devs promising that things are bigger and better with the sequel, we reckon you’ll easily spend a similar amount of time and then some in the Forbidden lands.

Who are the main characters in Monster Hunter Wilds?

As a hunter, you’re not alone. Which is handy really, because those beasties aren’t pushovers.

  • Hunter – This is who you’ll be playing as. After being assigned to the Forbidden Lands Research Commission (sounds fancy), your job is pretty straightforward. Explore this unexplored region and report back to your masters. Just try not to end up as a monster’s lunch.

  • Nata – We don’t know much about Nata beyond how mysterious he is. He’ll join you on your quest, and we reckon he’s going to have a big part to play.

  • Gemma – Your gear is going to be pretty battered after a day’s hunting. Gem is a talented blacksmith and can fix up any damaged weapons and armour. Oh, and when you need some new equipment, she’ll craft it for you too.

  • Alma – It’s not all about brawn here. Alma is your handler and can give you some useful knowledge about your missions and the enemies you’ll be facing.

  • Palico – If you ever wished your cat could talk back, now it can. This feline creature can speak with people and will offer up hunting support right when you need it. We just hope it doesn’t need constant treats…

What are the different Monster Hunter Wilds game mode options?

You can fight your way through the game alone, or with a group of buddies. Fire off an SOS signal while you’re out on the plains, and you can call three other players in to help you out. When you’re outnumbered in a scrap, it can be a life saver. Literally.

If you prefer the lone wolf vibe – and don’t want to deal with someone screaming down a headset at you – you’re still going to have some backup. Launching off that flare can also call in a team of NPC hunters. And they’re skilled enough to even the odds too.

What Monster Hunter Wilds features are player customisable?

Like the previous games, there’s a whole lot of customisation here. After making your character from scratch (make sure to choose a suitably badass haircut), you’ll need to pick out some equipment.

With 14 different weapons to choose from, you’ll definitely be able to find something to suit your playstyle. The classics – like the hammer and great sword are back – dishing out the damage with slow, powerful swings. While the new lance lets you stay nimble while you jab from a distance and dash out of harms way.

Then there’s armour. And now, any character (and any gender) can wear any type of gear. This wasn’t possible in the older games. There are no restrictions here though, letting you mix and match your look from a whole barracks’ worth of chainmail, plate armour and more.
