If your laptop or desktop is a few years old, chances are you’ll probably be running an old version of Windows – maybe Windows 7 or Windows 8. Because while Windows 10 will feel really familiar to anyone who’s got used to an older version, there are some major improvements for you to enjoy!

Even if you install new Windows 10 on your old laptop, you still aren’t making the most of everything that’s on offer. From better battery life, amped-up security and touchscreen magic, find out why we think you’ll give the newest Windows a 10.

No waiting around

One of the drawbacks of older operating systems on older machines is the waiting time. Waiting for your machine to warm up could send you off for a cup of tea in the time it takes to get going.

Whether you’re waiting for your computer to power-on at the start of your day, wake up after a nap, or just load-up web pages - you’ll find everything a lot more instant. Power management has been greatly improved – so if you’re on the move, you’ll find your battery lasts longer. No waiting around by the charger either!

New and improved Start menu

One great feature of Windows is the handy Start menu, which is an easy way to find your go-to files and programs. Windows 10 has kept this and even introduced tiles – so everything is easy to find. If you have a microphone plugged in, you can also use Cortana (Windows’ virtual assistant) to help you find what you need just by asking!

And speaking of searching, you’ll find your Windows 10 desktop has a search bar that will find what you need in a flash – whether that’s on your computer or online.

More secure than ever before

Once upon a time, the biggest security features on most PCs just meant remembering your password when the screen locked. But Windows 10 brings a raft of features that makes it feel like Fort Knox. Microsoft Defender Antivirus comes built-in for safer surfing. Plus, security updates happen automatically, so you don’t have to worry about staying secure.

Upgrade to a new PC and it gets even better. You’ll be able to use everything, from the facial recognition to the fingerprint reader of Windows Hello.

Microsoft Store

If you have an Android phone, you’ll be used to getting all your apps from Play Store. Windows now has its own version – Microsoft Store. It’s a great place to find all the apps you’ll ever need – from weather forecast apps to Netflix. This works especially well when you get a new device (like a Microsoft Surface Pro 7) or desktop screen with touchscreen capability.

Microsoft Edge

Windows 10 also comes with its own brilliant browser – Microsoft Edge. It’s a super speedy and secure browser that let you use all kinds of neat features, such as marking-up web pages with notes. There’s also a Reading mode that removes ads and clutter – so you can focus on an article or recipe with no distractions.

Touch screen support

Since more new laptops and desktop screens are coming with touchscreen, Windows 10 helps you make the most of it. That means you can ditch the mouse with touch-friendly apps – whether that’s editing software or just your fave game. You can also use a stylus to make notes on apps like Word or unleash your creativity with sketches and drawings.

Settings made simple

While Control Panel is still part of the Windows experience, simpler everyday changes can be made in Settings. Things you use a lot of are grouped together in an easy-to-use interface. So - if you want to change screen display or connect a printer for example, you’ll find that in Settings. No more wading through the Control Panel!

Microsoft 365

One of the best things about running Windows has to be all those tried and trusted apps that help you get things done. So, whether it’s old trusted favourites like Word, PowerPoint or working-from-home lifesavers like Teams, you’ll find it all with Microsoft 365.

While all these programs have been given an upgrade; they also work with Microsoft’s OneDrive. This means you can view or work on files from anywhere. And thanks to OneDrive you can have several people collaborating on the same document, at the same time. So, whether it’s a spreadsheet or a birthday party invite, everybody can get involved!
