Washing machine door won't open? Yep, it can be really frustrating. Especially when you've got a full load of fresh laundry stuck in there getting damp and smelly.

But stop panicking and drop that crowbar! That's because we've got some far less destructive tips on how to open your washing machine door safely. Plus, a few pointers on preventing a sticky door in the future.

What you’ll need:

Before we get started, here are some tools and items you’ll want to grab first…

  • Screwdriver

  • Strong nylon cord (or similar)

  • Credit card

  • Towels

  • Shallow container

Please note: Carrying out some of the possible fixes mentioned in this article may void your washing machine's warranty. Always check your washing machine's manual first for guidance.

Common causes of a jammed washing machine door

There could be a few reasons why your washing machine door won't open at the end of its cycle:

  • Timed or thermal lock: Most washing machines have timed or thermal locks that won't let you open the door for a couple of minutes after a program has finished. This is normal, so be patient.

  • Child lock is on: Many machines have child locks to stop kids from changing settings or opening the door mid-wash. It can sometimes be easy to activate this accidentally.

  • Water hasn't properly drained: Lots of washing machines won't allow you to open their doors until all the water has drained out first. If there's water left after a cycle, this means that you might have an issue with your drain pump filter.

  • Jammed door lock: If the handle is stiff and won't budge, then the locking mechanism is probably jammed due to a misaligned door.

  • Broken handle: Loose handle that’s not doing anything? This could be a sign that the door handle or catch has snapped.

  • Power failure: A power cut can cause a washing machine door to become stuck. If this is the case, wait for the power to be restored and try opening it again.

How to open a locked washing machine door safely

Don't call someone in to repair your washing machine just yet. Give one of these a go first:

  • Let your machine cool down: Already waited a couple of minutes after the cycle's finished and the door still won't open? Try turning your machine off and leaving it to cool for about ten minutes. Then try opening the door again.

  • Run a spin/drain cycle: If some water's still left in your machine after the cycle’s finished, try running the spin/drain program to clear out that extra water. This could unlock the machine and let you open the door.

  • Hit the door over the lock area: If those didn't do the trick, gently hit the lock area of your machine with the palm of your hand. This might release the locking mechanism.

  • Use the emergency door release tab: On some washing machines (like Bosch, Hotpoint and Indesit models) you can open their doors manually by pulling down on a hidden release tab with a screwdriver. You’ll usually find this inside a removable flap under the door.

  • Use strong, thin cord: You could try feeding some trimmer or fishing line around your washing machine’s door to release its locking hook. Unplug your machine first, then wrap the cord around the door from the handle area and pull the line to the other side. This will hopefully move the hook back and unlock the door.

  • Use a credit card: Not got any cord? You can use an old credit card instead. Just unplug your machine and slip the card under the door, then push the locking hook to release the door. This will only work on some washing machines though, with many modern models featuring sunken doors with angled routes to their lock.

How to prevent future washing machine door jams

A jammed door can be a frustrating experience. So, once you’ve got it solved, here are some pointers to help keep your washing machine door from not opening again:

  • Avoid overloading: If you put too many clothes or towels in your washing machine, it can put stress on the door and hinge(s). This can lead to misalignment and potential door jams.

  • Check your washing machine is level: If your machine isn't sitting straight, then the door may also become misaligned this way.

  • Clean your washing machine's drain pump filter: This is what collects all the lint, hair, coins, and other small objects left in pockets. It's important to clear this filter out often, otherwise it could end up clogging the pump and wastewater system. This will then stop your washing machine from draining water properly, and in turn, prevent you from opening its door.

  • Keep the door, hinge, and lock clean: Regularly cleaning grime and debris build-ups off your washing machine’s door, hinge, and locking mechanism can help stop the door from getting stuck. We’ve got some effective laundry accessories to help with this.

FAQs

How do I open my washing machine's door when it's full of water?

In short — don't even try. It's always best to get rid of any water left in your washing machine before opening the door. If the wash program you just used didn't clear all the water as it should have done, try running the spin/drain cycle to remove the water before opening the door.

If that doesn't work, it means that you probably have a problem with your drain pump filter and wastewater system.

How do I open my washing machine's filter?

You can usually access the drain pump filter from a small door at the bottom right-hand corner of your washing machine. Before you remove it though, place a few towels or a shallow dish underneath to catch any spills.

All you need to do is slowly turn the filter anti-clockwise and let the water drain out. Then remove the filter completely and clear all the debris and objects that were stuck.
